LAPP, a global provider of cable and connectivity solutions, has marked 30 years of operations in India, highlighting the country’s transformation into the company’s largest market outside Germany. For the family-owned German enterprise, the milestone reflects three decades of investment in local manufacturing, engineering capabilities, talent and customer partnerships.
LAPP’s commitment to India began well before the country became a major focus for international businesses. Guided by the vision of founder Ursula Ida Lapp and her sons Siegbert and Andreas, the company recognised India’s long-term economic potential during visits to the country in the 1980s. The family saw opportunities in India’s skilled and energetic workforce, diverse culture, democratic institutions and emerging industrial potential.
“When my grandmother, my father and my uncle came to India in the 1980s, they saw something that many others overlooked,” said Matthias Lapp, third-generation CEO of LAPP Group. “At the time, most westerners had a very shallow impression of India, seeing mostly hardships and challenges. My family saw something different. They saw the energy of the people, the richness of India’s culture, the democratic institutions, and the extraordinary economic potential. They chose to invest in the country’s future.”
Following several years of working with local partners, LAPP established its Indian headquarters in Bengaluru in 1996. The company commenced its first cable manufacturing operations in 1998 at Jigani, near Bengaluru. Since then, LAPP has steadily expanded its manufacturing footprint, engineering capabilities and distribution network across the country.
Today, LAPP India operates three manufacturing facilities, three warehouses, two harnessing plants and nine regional sales offices, supported by more than 500 employees. Its Bhopal facility in Madhya Pradesh has recently been expanded and has become the largest manufacturing site within LAPP’s global production network. The company also operates some of its most advanced manufacturing capabilities in India.
“Localisation is important,” said Matthias Lapp. “We develop and manufacture in India for the Indian market. At the same time, we draw on the LAPP Group’s global network: product managers in Germany work alongside materials experts in Switzerland and Indian engineers to develop the best possible solutions for our customers.”
LAPP India now serves customers across industrial automation, manufacturing, infrastructure, railways, renewable energy, oil and gas, food and beverage, e-mobility and other sectors. India’s industrial growth, infrastructure development and energy transition continue to create opportunities aligned with LAPP’s core markets.
“India combines strong economic growth, rapid industrialization, infrastructure development, and energy transition. These megatrends closely align with the industries LAPP serves. And that is exactly why India will continue to play a central role in our global growth strategy. Not merely as a manufacturing base, but as a core strategic market,” Matthias Lapp added.
The Lapp family’s relationship with India also extends beyond business. Matthias Lapp travelled across India with his family during his childhood, while Andreas Lapp, former CEO of LAPP, has served as Honorary Consul of the Republic of India in two German states since 2000. He also hosts the annual Stuttgart meets Mumbai Wine Fest, which contributes to Indo-German cultural and business dialogue.
Founded in 1959 and headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, LAPP provides integrated solutions and branded products spanning cables, industrial connectors, connection technology, customised system solutions, automation and robotics solutions and technical accessories. The company generated consolidated sales of €1.93 billion in fiscal 2025, employs approximately 5,700 people worldwide, operates 27 manufacturing locations and serves customers in more than 80 countries.
Headquartered in Bengaluru, LAPP India is a wholly owned subsidiary of LAPP and has been serving the Indian market since 1996. Over the past three decades, the company has established India as LAPP’s largest market outside Germany, supported by its growing manufacturing, engineering and customer service capabilities.
With a workforce of more than 500 employees, LAPP India operates three manufacturing facilities located in Bengaluru, Bhopal and Dharuhera. Its operations are supported by a nationwide network covering sales, engineering and logistics, enabling the company to serve customers across a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, industrial automation, infrastructure, railways, renewable energy, mobility and process industries.
Through its “In India for India” approach, LAPP India combines the global quality standards, technology and engineering expertise of the LAPP Group with strong local manufacturing and customer support capabilities. This strategy enables the company to develop and deliver solutions tailored to the evolving requirements of customers across India’s rapidly expanding industrial landscape.
