BorgWarner has signed an agreement with a leading European vehicle manufacturer to supply its variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbocharger for one of the company’s hybrid electric vehicle platforms. The deal places BorgWarner within the global supplier network supporting one of the automaker’s first hybrid launches in North America.

The VTG turbocharger allows accurate engine control across a wide range of operating speeds, improving efficiency, performance, and fuel economy while reducing emissions. Electrically controlled adjustable vanes regulate turbine pressure, enabling faster response and stronger power delivery. Designed specifically for the customer’s packaging requirements, the system includes an updated turbine housing to suit space limitations and improve responsiveness.

Dr Volker Weng, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc and President and General Manager of Turbos and Thermal Technologies, said the agreement strengthens a long-standing partnership with the automaker. He noted that BorgWarner’s experience delivering VTG turbochargers for similar European applications and its reputation for quality and dependability helped secure the project and expand collaboration in North America.

The turbocharger also features a shot-peened compressor wheel to enhance strength and durability. This process improves resistance to wear, extending component life under demanding conditions. A built-in silencer at the compressor outlet helps reduce vehicle noise.
