VA TECH WABAG, a leading multinational water technology company, has secured a major Design, Build and Operate (DBO) contract for the Doha Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Desalination Plant with Recarbonation System – Stage II in Kuwait. Awarded by the Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy (MEWRE), Kuwait, the project represents WABAG’s first major contract in the country and strengthens its growing presence across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
The project will be executed through an unincorporated joint venture led by WABAG in partnership with Heavy Engineering Industries & Shipbuilding Company K.S.C. (HEISCO). Under the contract, the joint venture will undertake the design, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of a 60 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) desalination facility, equivalent to approximately 272 million litres per day (MLD).
Scheduled for completion within 36 months, the state-of-the-art plant will incorporate advanced seawater reverse osmosis technology along with an integrated recarbonation system to ensure the production of high-quality potable water. The contract also includes a five-year operation and maintenance period, reinforcing long-term efficiency, reliability and performance.
The Doha SWRO Stage II project is expected to play a significant role in supporting Kuwait’s growing water requirements and enhancing national water security. In line with the country’s sustainability objectives, the facility will feature solar photovoltaic systems that will partially meet the plant’s energy needs, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and greater adoption of renewable energy sources.
The project further strengthens WABAG’s position as a key player in the global desalination sector and highlights its ability to deliver large-scale, technologically advanced water infrastructure projects in challenging environments.
Commenting on the development, Rohan Mittal, Head – Strategy and Business Growth, GCC, said, “The Doha SWRO II Project marks a significant milestone in WABAG’s growth journey in the GCC region and our entry into Kuwait, a strategically important market. We are honoured to have been selected by the Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy for this critical infrastructure project. The facility will contribute meaningfully to Kuwait’s long-term water security while advancing sustainable and energy-efficient water production.”
