VA TECH WABAG, one of the world’s leading water technology companies focused exclusively on the water and wastewater sector, has secured a major Design and Build contract for the Ajman Sewage Biorefinery Plant – Phase 3 in the United Arab Emirates. The contract has been awarded by Ajman Sewerage (Private) Company Limited and will be executed through a consortium led by WABAG.
The project represents a significant milestone in WABAG’s international growth strategy, marking its entry into the UAE market while further strengthening its footprint across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. Scheduled for completion within 24 months, the facility is expected to play an important role in supporting the emirate’s long-term wastewater treatment and resource recovery objectives.
The scope of work includes the design, engineering, procurement, and construction of a 60 million litres per day (MLD) sewage treatment plant equipped with advanced treatment technologies. The facility will incorporate inlet works, primary and secondary treatment systems, tertiary filtration, odor management infrastructure, and an integrated sludge treatment system.
A key feature of the project is its biorefinery-oriented approach, which combines wastewater treatment with resource recovery and energy generation. The sludge management facilities will include digesters, gas holders, gas scrubbers, and power generation systems designed to improve operational sustainability and reduce environmental impact.
The plant will utilize advanced Activated Sludge Process (ASP) technology for biological treatment, complemented by tertiary disc filtration systems to ensure high-quality treated water that meets stringent regulatory standards. The project aligns with the UAE’s broader focus on water security, environmental stewardship, and infrastructure modernization.
Commenting on the development, Rohan Mittal, Head – Strategy and Business Growth – GCC at WABAG, said the project establishes an important foundation for the company’s future growth in the Middle East. “This contract marks a defining moment in our regional expansion journey. The UAE represents one of the most progressive and strategically important water infrastructure markets globally. Securing this project demonstrates our ability to deliver complex and sustainable wastewater solutions while reinforcing our credentials across the GCC region,” he said.
The project is expected to strengthen WABAG’s position as a trusted partner for advanced water and wastewater infrastructure projects. It also opens new opportunities for participation in future investments focused on wastewater recycling, resource recovery, and sustainable urban infrastructure across the Middle East, a region that continues to prioritize resilient and environmentally responsible water management solutions.
Operating in more than 25 countries with a workforce of over 2,000 water professionals, WABAG has designed and built over 1,500 water and wastewater treatment plants globally over the last three decades. The company manages the complete water value chain, including engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and long-term plant operations.
WABAG’s technology-driven approach is supported by advanced research and development centres in India and Europe, along with a portfolio of more than 125 intellectual property rights.
