Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has commissioned a 72.5 MW captive solar power project at Kalasar in Bikaner, Rajasthan, developed for Tata Steel Limited. The project will support Tata Steel’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions while increasing the use of renewable energy in its operations. It is expected to generate around 166 million units of green energy annually and offset approximately 1,18,856 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

The project uses 1,71,360 solar modules manufactured by TP Solar Limited. The large-scale installation combines solar generation with technology and engineering capabilities aimed at delivering reliable renewable power for industrial use. The commissioning adds to TPREL’s growing renewable energy portfolio and strengthens its role in providing clean power solutions to industrial customers. The company serves sectors including steel, automobile, data centres, communications, information technology, petrochemicals, FMCG and biotechnology.

The project also highlights the increasing use of captive renewable energy as industrial companies work to reduce emissions and manage their long-term energy requirements. With the addition of the Bikaner project, TPREL’s total renewable utility capacity has reached 12.3 GW. Around 7 GW is operational, comprising approximately 5.7 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of wind capacity. Another 5.3 GW is under various stages of implementation, including 2.2 GW of solar and 3.1 GW of wind projects.

These projects are expected to be commissioned in phases over the next six to 24 months. The Bikaner project is part of Tata Power’s wider clean energy strategy and supports India’s goal of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. TPREL is continuing to develop renewable energy projects for commercial and industrial customers as demand for lower-carbon power grows.

Tata Power Renewable Energy is a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited and is engaged in developing renewable energy generation and related solutions across India. The Tata Power Company has an operational and under-construction capacity of more than 26 GW across its generation portfolio. This includes approximately 17.7 GW of clean and green energy capacity, including projects under construction, and around 8.8 GW of thermal generation capacity.

The company also operates a large transmission and distribution network, with more than 7,800 circuit kilometres of transmission lines, including pipeline projects, and serves more than 13 million customers across its distribution businesses. Tata Power has also established 4.9 GW of integrated solar cell and module manufacturing capacity, signed 2.8 GW of pumped hydro storage projects and expanded its electric vehicle charging network to more than 7,000 public charging points across 717 cities and towns. The company has set a target of achieving Net Zero by 2045 and continues to invest in renewable generation, energy storage, solar manufacturing, EV charging and other clean energy solutions.
