Natco Pharma Limited has invested US$14 million in eGenesis, Inc, a biotechnology company developing genetically engineered organs for transplantation. The investment has been made through Natco’s wholly owned subsidiaries, NATCO Pharma (Canada) Inc. and NATCO Pharma South Africa Proprietary Limited.

NATCO Pharma (Canada) Inc. has invested US$9.5 million, while NATCO Pharma South Africa Proprietary Limited has invested US$4.5 million in eGenesis through convertible promissory notes. The latest investment follows Natco Pharma’s US$8 million investment in eGenesis in 2024 through preferred stock. With the new investment, Natco Pharma’s total investment in eGenesis has increased to US$22 million.

eGenesis is working to address the global shortage of transplantable organs through genome engineering. The company has developed its EGEN™ Platform, which uses genetic engineering to address cross-species molecular incompatibilities and viral risks associated with transplanting organs between animals and humans.

The technology is being developed to support the transplantation of organs such as kidneys, hearts and livers. eGenesis is currently advancing programmes focused on kidney transplantation, acute liver failure and heart transplantation. The company achieved a significant milestone in March 2024 when it announced the world’s first transplant of a genetically modified pig kidney into a living patient. The procedure was authorised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under its Expanded Access pathway.

The programme was subsequently followed by pig kidney transplants in two additional patients. According to eGenesis, the outcomes from these procedures have provided important information for the continued development of its transplantation technology.

The latest investment strengthens the relationship between Natco Pharma and eGenesis as the biotechnology company advances its organ transplantation programmes. Natco Pharma is a research-driven pharmaceutical company headquartered in Hyderabad. It develops, manufactures and markets generic and branded medicines, specialty pharmaceutical products, active pharmaceutical ingredients and crop protection products.

The company has a strong presence in oncology and focuses on products with limited competition in international markets, including the United States. Its manufacturing facilities are approved by several regulatory authorities, including the U.S. FDA, Brazil’s ANVISA, Health Canada and the World Health Organization.

Natco’s products are marketed across more than 50 countries. eGenesis, headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, focuses on genome engineering for solid-organ and therapeutic-cell transplantation. Its technology platform is designed to modify animal organs to improve their suitability for human transplantation while addressing key biological and safety barriers.

The partnership comes as the medical community continues to explore new approaches to address the shortage of organs available for patients requiring transplantation. Through its investment, Natco Pharma is supporting the development of a technology that could potentially expand access to transplantable organs and create new treatment options for patients suffering from serious organ failure.
