Okhai, the social enterprise initiative supported by Tata Chemicals, has unveiled its latest Ajrakh collection, presenting a contemporary interpretation of one of India’s oldest textile traditions believed to date back to the Indus Valley Civilisation. Developed in collaboration with artisan designer Mubin Khatri and his team based in Dhamadka, Kutch, the collection brings together heritage craftsmanship and modern design through a curated range of 19 garments. The collection was developed over an eight-month period and combines traditional Ajrakh techniques with updated silhouettes, experimental print layouts and contemporary styling elements.

Crafted using breathable cotton and cotton twill fabrics, the collection incorporates natural dyes and traditional processes such as pothai, a hand-painting method that uses natural colours to create intricate detailing. Moving beyond conventional block-printing practices, the collection experiments with separate outline and filler blocks to produce fresh visual patterns and greater design versatility. The launch also introduces Ajrakh craftsmanship on twill cotton denim, marking a modern reinterpretation of the traditional textile art form while expanding its appeal for contemporary wardrobes.

According to Okhai, the collection reflects a conscious effort to preserve traditional Indian crafts while adapting them for evolving consumer preferences. Sustainability remains central to the initiative, with the use of natural fabrics, eco-friendly dyes and thoughtful reuse of existing design blocks to minimise material waste during production.

Speaking on the launch, Manorath Dhillon, who currently heads Okhai and has worked extensively with Indian crafts, said the initiative sought to balance heritage and innovation. He noted that Ajrakh represents a craft deeply rooted in history and artisan communities, and the collection was designed to explore how the textile tradition could evolve for modern consumers without compromising authenticity.

Okhai has continued to work closely with artisan communities across India to create sustainable livelihood opportunities while promoting regional textile traditions and handcrafted products. Through collaborations with skilled artisans and craft clusters, the platform aims to support long-term preservation of indigenous crafts and strengthen access to contemporary markets.

The Ajrakh collection forms part of Okhai’s broader effort to connect traditional Indian craftsmanship with modern design sensibilities and environmentally conscious production practices. The initiative also highlights growing consumer interest in handcrafted, sustainable and culturally rooted fashion products within India’s evolving lifestyle and apparel market.
