Larsen & Toubro’s Water & Effluent Treatment (WET) division has secured a major contract from the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water & Sewerage Board for the execution of a comprehensive water supply project in Assam. The initiative is aimed at delivering uninterrupted, safe drinking water to households across South-East Guwahati while enhancing the overall dependability of the city’s water distribution network.

The project has been designed to provide round-the-clock water access, addressing long-standing supply challenges in the region. Once completed, it is expected to significantly improve service quality for residents while supporting the city’s expanding urban infrastructure needs.

Under the contract, L&T will undertake end-to-end responsibilities covering engineering, procurement, construction, installation, testing, and commissioning. The scope includes a barge-mounted intake system, raw water transmission pipelines, a modern water treatment facility, storage reservoirs, and booster pumping stations. In addition, an extensive distribution network will be developed, ensuring last-mile connectivity through household service connections.

A key feature of the project is the integration of an advanced Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. This will enable real-time monitoring, operational control, and performance optimisation across the entire water network. The company will also be responsible for operating and maintaining the system for a period of five years following commissioning, ensuring sustained efficiency and reliability.

The project reflects a growing emphasis on smart water management solutions that combine infrastructure development with digital monitoring capabilities. By incorporating modern technologies, the initiative aims to minimise water losses, improve system responsiveness, and deliver consistent service standards to end users.

This latest contract reinforces L&T’s presence in India’s northeastern region, a market that continues to see increased investment in public infrastructure. It also highlights the company’s continued focus on delivering sustainable and scalable water solutions tailored to the needs of rapidly urbanising areas.

Through its WET business, L&T has been actively involved in developing water and wastewater treatment systems across India and international markets. The company’s portfolio includes large-scale urban water supply schemes, industrial water solutions, and advanced treatment technologies designed to meet stringent environmental standards.

The Guwahati project represents another step forward in L&T’s efforts to support urban development through reliable water infrastructure. By combining engineering expertise with digital innovation, the company aims to contribute to improved quality of life for communities while supporting long-term resource sustainability.
