Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a significant order from the Department of Atomic Energy for the construction of the LIGO India Observatory. The project will be executed jointly by L&T’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure (HCI) and Heavy Engineering (HE) business verticals.

The state-of-the-art observatory will be established at Aundha in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district and will form part of India’s flagship Mega Science initiatives. LIGO, or the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, is designed to detect gravitational waves generated by powerful cosmic events such as black hole mergers and neutron star collisions. The facility uses multi-kilometer laser interferometry systems capable of measuring minute distortions in spacetime.

The LIGO India project is being developed through collaboration among leading Indian scientific institutions, including the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT) and the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), in partnership with the LIGO Laboratory in the United States. The initiative is supported by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), reinforcing its global scientific significance.

L&T’s scope of work covers comprehensive engineering, procurement and construction of highly specialized, vibration-sensitive and precision-driven civil infrastructure. The mandate also includes the manufacture and installation of an ultra-high vacuum compatible 8-kilometer beam tube system and associated critical vacuum equipment. In addition, L&T will undertake the integration of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, fire protection, vacuum control, monitoring systems and supporting utilities required for seamless operation of the observatory.

The project is scheduled for completion within 48 months. This order highlights L&T’s established expertise in delivering complex and technologically advanced infrastructure across science and research domains. The company has consistently demonstrated capabilities in executing high-precision engineering assignments that demand stringent quality standards and integrated project management.

The LIGO India Observatory will position the country at the forefront of gravitational wave research, contributing to global scientific discovery while strengthening India’s capabilities in advanced engineering and fundamental physics research.
