Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has commissioned and operationalised a state-of-the-art Hot Isostatic Press (HIP) facility at its Nasik Division to support the processing of Carbon–Carbon Brake Discs for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk 1A programme. The new facility marks a significant step in strengthening indigenous aerospace manufacturing capabilities and enhancing self-reliance in critical defence technologies.

The commissioning of the HIP facility will enable HAL to carry out specialised densification and processing of carbon–carbon composite brake discs used in the LCA Mk 1A aircraft. These brake discs are vital for the aircraft’s braking system, offering high thermal resistance, superior strength, and durability required for fighter aircraft operating under demanding flight conditions.

Hot Isostatic Pressing is an advanced manufacturing process that applies high temperature and isostatic gas pressure simultaneously to eliminate internal porosity and improve the mechanical properties of high-performance materials. The newly installed facility will play a crucial role in enhancing the structural integrity, reliability, and performance of carbon–carbon brake components used in the LCA Mk 1A fleet.

With this development, HAL aims to strengthen domestic capability in processing critical aerospace-grade materials while reducing dependence on external suppliers. The in-house HIP facility is expected to streamline the manufacturing process for brake discs, improve quality control, and support faster production timelines for the LCA Mk 1A programme.

The Nasik Division of HAL plays a key role in the company’s aircraft manufacturing ecosystem and supports several important defence aviation programmes. The addition of the HIP facility further expands the division’s advanced manufacturing infrastructure and reinforces HAL’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge technologies for aerospace production.

The Light Combat Aircraft Mk 1A is an upgraded variant of India’s indigenous fighter aircraft designed to enhance combat capability, maintainability, and operational efficiency. The aircraft incorporates several advanced systems and indigenous components developed to strengthen India’s defence preparedness and technological capability.

The operationalisation of the HIP facility aligns with the national objective of promoting indigenous design, development, and manufacturing under the broader push for self-reliance in the defence sector. By establishing critical processing capabilities within the country, HAL continues to contribute to the development of a robust domestic aerospace supply chain.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited remains at the forefront of India’s aerospace and defence manufacturing sector, playing a vital role in the design, development, production, and maintenance of a wide range of aircraft, helicopters, aero-engines, avionics, and aerospace structures for both military and civil applications.
