Alstom has been awarded a €915 million turnkey contract to deliver Metro Line 1 in Belgrade, marking the city’s first fully automated metro system and a transformative milestone in its urban development. The project represents a significant step toward modernizing public transport infrastructure while addressing long-standing congestion challenges in the Serbian capital.

The first phase of Metro Line 1 will connect Makiško Polje to Karaburma, spanning 15 kilometers and comprising 15 stations, including 11 kilometers of underground tunnels. By shifting a substantial portion of commuter traffic below ground, the metro is expected to ease surface congestion and improve overall urban mobility. The system will introduce advanced automation, positioning Belgrade among leading European cities with modern, efficient transit solutions.

Alstom will act as system integrator, delivering a comprehensive solution that includes 32 driverless Metropolis trains, signaling and telecommunications systems, power supply, trackwork, platform screen doors, depot equipment, and a centralized control center with integrated cybersecurity systems. The trains will be manufactured at Alstom’s Valenciennes facility in France and will operate using the company’s Urbalis CBTC technology, enabling high-capacity, reliable, and fully automated services.

Andrew DeLeone, President of Alstom Europe, highlighted the strategic importance of the project, noting that the metro will redefine daily commuting for nearly two million residents while supporting the city’s long-term economic and environmental goals. The system is designed to deliver high-frequency service with intervals as short as 90 seconds, enhancing efficiency and passenger capacity.

The initiative is being developed for Belgrade Metro & Train, the city’s public utility company, and benefits from financial backing from the French government, underscoring strong bilateral cooperation between France and Serbia. Alstom has officially commenced the design phase of the project.

Globally, Alstom is recognized as a pioneer in automated metro systems, with nearly 30 driverless lines in operation across major cities including Paris, Singapore, and Lyon. With over five decades of experience and more than 80 turnkey systems in commercial service, the company continues to play a leading role in advancing sustainable urban mobility worldwide.
