Delhi Metro Line 7 and Line 8 Extensions Begin Operations with Alstom Trains and Signalling Systems

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has commenced passenger services on extensions of Metro Line 7 (Pink Line) and Line 8 (Magenta Line), supported by trains and signalling systems supplied by Alstom, a global provider of smart and sustainable mobility solutions. The newly opened sections include the Majlis Park to Maujpur stretch on Line 7 and the Majlis Park to Deepali Chowk section on Line 8. These extensions strengthen connectivity across the National Capital Territory and improve interchange access between key routes within the Delhi Metro network.

The extension of Line 8 is particularly significant as it connects with three major metro corridors. Commuters can now interchange with the Yellow Line at Badli, the Red Line at Madhuban Chowk, and the Pink Line at Majlis Park, helping reduce travel times and improve network accessibility.

Alstom has supplied modern Metropolis metro trainsets along with advanced signalling technology for the new sections. These trains are part of a larger €312 million contract under which Alstom is delivering 312 metro cars for Delhi Metro Phase IV.

The trains are fully manufactured in India at Alstom’s rolling stock facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, which is the company’s largest urban rail manufacturing site in Asia. Designed for safety and efficiency, the trains support a safe operating speed of 95 km/h and an operational speed of 85 km/h. They also feature energy-efficient systems and high recyclability standards to support environmentally responsible urban transport.

Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, said the company is proud to continue its long-standing collaboration with DMRC as the metro network expands. He noted that the Pink and Magenta Line extensions will further strengthen connectivity across Delhi while offering commuters a safe and efficient travel experience.

Alstom has also implemented the Urbalis Flo signalling system on the Line 7 extension. This Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) technology enables precise train operations and supports future implementation of fully automated, driverless operations using Grade of Automation level 4. With the addition of the new section, the Pink Line will become the first circular route in the Delhi Metro network and the longest metro line in the system to operate with the highest level of unattended train operation in India.

Alstom has been a long-term partner in the development of the Delhi Metro system, supplying more than 800 metro cars currently operating across the network. The company has also delivered trains and rail systems for metro projects in several other Indian cities including Chennai, Mumbai, Lucknow, Kochi, Agra, Kanpur, Bhopal, and Indore. In addition, Alstom recently secured a 10-year maintenance contract with DMRC covering Lines 1 and 2, which includes servicing trains, plant systems, and equipment at the Badli depot.
