Vimag Labs, a Bengaluru-based deep-technology company developing next-generation electric motor systems, has been granted its fifth patent in India for its proprietary Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor (VMSM) platform. The latest patent, titled “A Robust Rotating Transformer Excited Synchronous Motor and Its Control,” protects the core architecture of the company’s software-defined, rare-earth-free motor technology.

The patented VMSM platform represents an alternative to conventional Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs), which depend on rare-earth magnets embedded in the rotor. Instead of using permanent magnets, the VMSM generates and regulates its magnetic field dynamically through advanced power electronics and proprietary control software. The brushless, slip-ring-free synchronous motor is designed to deliver performance comparable to or better than conventional permanent magnet motors while eliminating dependence on rare-earth materials.

The newly granted patent further strengthens Vimag Labs’ intellectual property portfolio, which now comprises five granted patents, ten patent applications under review and fifteen trademark filings. The company’s intellectual property covers motor architecture, software-based control systems, power electronics and application-specific technologies for multiple industrial sectors.

Vimag Labs is currently advancing the commercial deployment of its technology through pilot programmes with established two-wheeler and passenger vehicle manufacturers. The company plans to expand its applications into light commercial vehicles, commercial vehicles and high-power industrial systems with power ratings ranging from 200 kW to 600 kW. Additional development programmes are focused on robotics, defence systems and advanced cooling applications.

The company believes its software-defined motor platform offers manufacturers lower production costs while reducing exposure to supply-chain risks associated with rare-earth magnets, a significant proportion of which are sourced globally from China. The technology also supports India’s efforts to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities for advanced electric mobility and industrial technologies.

Commenting on the milestone, Manish Seth, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Vimag Labs, said, “This patent is the outcome of over 87,600 engineering hours. It strengthens every dimension of our commercial roadmap—OEM partnerships, licensing, manufacturing scale-up and future growth.”

He added, “Our long-term vision is to build scalable, software-driven, magnet-free motor systems for global electrification. This innovation strengthens India’s deep-tech base across electric mobility, power electronics, robotics, defence and clean-energy systems.”

Vimag Labs recently secured US$5 million in Series A funding led by Accel, with participation from Chakra Growth Fund and Thinkuvate. The company has also entered into a manufacturing memorandum of understanding with Jendamark Pvt Ltd to support large-scale production of its VMSM platform. Founded in Bengaluru, Vimag Labs is expanding its operations across India, Europe and the United States as it develops electric motor technologies for mobility, industrial automation and clean energy applications.
