Sicona Battery Technologies, an Australian advanced battery materials company backed by Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd has secured funding of up to AUD 45 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to accelerate the commercialisation of its next-generation silicon-carbon anode technology for lithium-ion batteries. The funding has been awarded under ARENA’s Battery Breakthrough Initiative and will support the development of a commercial-scale demonstration facility at BlueScope Steel’s Port Kembla precinct in New South Wales, Australia. The facility will manufacture Sicona’s proprietary SiCx® silicon-carbon anode material, a technology designed to improve battery performance across electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage applications.

The project represents a major milestone in Sicona’s commercialisation strategy and strengthens Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd.’s focus on expanding its global presence in advanced battery materials. Himadri’s investment in Sicona forms part of its long-term strategy to participate in the evolving clean energy ecosystem, complementing its existing capabilities and investments in lithium-ion battery materials and specialty carbon solutions.

Sicona’s silicon-carbon anode technology has demonstrated significant potential to enhance lithium-ion battery performance. According to ARENA, the technology can increase battery energy density by up to 20% while enabling charging speeds up to 40% faster than conventional graphite-based anodes. The material is also engineered to integrate with existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes, allowing battery producers to adopt the technology without requiring extensive modifications to their current production infrastructure.

The Port Kembla demonstration facility will play a critical role in validating Sicona’s proprietary manufacturing process at commercial scale. The plant will also produce qualification samples for global battery manufacturers and electric vehicle original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), creating a pathway for future commercial partnerships, offtake agreements and large-scale deployment of the technology.

The latest funding underscores the growing global emphasis on developing resilient battery supply chains and accelerating innovation in critical battery materials. With demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage solutions continuing to expand, advanced materials such as silicon-carbon anodes are emerging as key technologies for improving battery range, charging efficiency and overall performance. For Himadri, the investment milestone reinforces the strategic importance of its partnership with Sicona and supports the company’s broader ambition of becoming a leading global player in advanced materials that enable the clean energy transition.

Industry experts consider silicon-carbon anode technology among the most promising advancements in lithium-ion battery development. By delivering higher energy density and faster charging capabilities while remaining compatible with existing manufacturing ecosystems, solutions such as Sicona’s SiCx® technology are expected to contribute significantly to the future of electric mobility and energy storage worldwide.
