Veolia, a global environmental services company, has secured two major municipal water contracts in Mumbai, marking the largest agreements signed by a French company in India’s municipal water sector. The projects will support the city’s long-term water security and sustainability goals while strengthening Veolia’s footprint in the country.

Veolia has been selected as the technology provider and awarded 15-year operations and maintenance contracts for the upcoming Bhandup Water Treatment Plant, with a capacity of 2,000 million litres per day, and the Panjrapur Water Treatment Plant, with a capacity of 910 million litres per day. Developed by Welspun Enterprises Ltd, the facilities are expected to be fully operational by 2030 and together will supply more than 60 percent of Mumbai’s drinking water needs. Using advanced treatment technologies, the plants are designed to deliver reliable, high-quality water while reducing energy use, improving efficiency, and limiting environmental impact in a densely populated urban setting.

The contracts build on Veolia’s 25 years of experience in India. One of its key projects is the Nagpur water supply programme, which includes five treatment plants with a combined capacity of about 786 million litres per day. Through digital tools such as Hubgrade®, Veolia improved system performance, cutting water losses significantly and providing round-the-clock supply to more than 3.5 million residents. The company also operates Nangloi Water Services in Delhi, supplying water to nearly one million people, and manages projects in Karnataka, delivering integrated municipal water services across several cities.

Estelle Brachlianoff, CEO of Veolia, said the Mumbai projects reflect the company’s long-term commitment to India. She noted that Veolia aims to combine technology and operational expertise to ensure sustainable performance of critical infrastructure while supporting India’s net-zero targets for 2070.

Beyond municipal water, Veolia continues to expand its work in waste management and energy solutions. The company operates Gujarat’s first Zero Liquid Discharge facility in Ankleshwar and is developing a large hazardous-waste landfill in Magnad with a capacity of 15 million metric tonnes. Veolia also runs India’s first 5-tonnes-per-day carbon capture plant for Tata Steel in Jamshedpur, capturing carbon dioxide for reuse.

Veolia is a global leader in environmental services, working every day to strengthen ecological resilience while supporting public health, industry, and local communities. With a workforce of 215,000 employees across five continents, the company partners with cities and businesses to address local environmental challenges using advanced technologies and practical solutions. Its expertise spans water and wastewater management, waste services—including hazardous waste treatment—and local energy systems, helping to reduce pollution, cut carbon emissions, and recover valuable resources.

By 2025, Veolia supplied safe drinking water to 110 million people and wastewater services to 97 million people worldwide. The company generated 45 million megawatt-hours of energy and processed 64 million tonnes of waste. Veolia Environnement, listed on Paris Euronext (VIE) and included in the Fortune 500 and SBF 120 indices, reported consolidated revenue of €44.4 billion in 2025.
