Toyota Material Handling Europe has introduced Operator Detection Assist (ODA), a new safety system designed to improve operator protection and operational control in warehouse environments. The feature is available as an optional enhancement for the company’s powered pallet trucks and stacker models, supporting safer and more efficient material handling.

The system has been developed to address the increasing demands of modern logistics operations, where high activity levels, confined spaces, and frequent load movements create complex safety challenges. ODA adds an additional layer of protection by continuously monitoring the operator’s position and automatically adjusting truck performance to reduce risk.

Using advanced sensor technology, the system detects the operator’s proximity to the vehicle and responds in real time. When the operator moves into specific zones in front of the truck, ODA modifies speed, acceleration, and braking to maintain controlled movement and minimise the likelihood of accidents. This proactive approach helps reduce incidents involving foot injuries and supports more consistent handling during daily operations.

The system operates through three defined safety zones. A stop zone immediately halts the truck when the operator is at risk, while additional zones manage speed and acceleration to maintain safe distances. These automatic adjustments occur seamlessly, allowing operators to maintain productivity while benefiting from continuous safety support.

ODA also adapts to changing conditions. When operators move outside predefined zones, the system activates a controlled operating mode that limits speed and ensures predictable vehicle behaviour. For longer travel distances, a transport mode temporarily adjusts system sensitivity to allow smoother movement, with full safety functionality restored as operating conditions change.

Flexibility is a key feature of the system, enabling businesses to configure settings based on their specific workflows and operational environments. Parameters such as stop zone distances can be adjusted to align with site requirements and safety policies.

The introduction of ODA reflects a broader focus on integrating intelligent technologies into material handling equipment. By combining automation with real-time responsiveness, the system supports safer behaviour, reduces the risk of misuse, and contributes to more stable and efficient operations.

Toyota Material Handling Europe stated that the new system is part of its ongoing efforts to develop solutions that enhance both safety and productivity on the warehouse floor. ODA is designed to support operators throughout their tasks while helping organisations maintain consistent performance standards. The system will be presented at LogiMAT 2026, taking place from March 24 to 26 in Stuttgart, where it will be demonstrated as part of the company’s latest intralogistics innovations.
