ABB has launched SPR2025, the latest release of its Symphony® Plus distributed control system (DCS), aimed at supporting modernization and improving operational performance across process and power industries. The new release is designed to serve both existing installations and new deployments, enabling organizations to upgrade systems while maintaining continuity and reliability.
SPR2025 provides a structured pathway for modernizing industrial operations, allowing upgrades to legacy Harmony Rack-based systems without interrupting ongoing processes. It also supports the integration of new automation technologies for greenfield projects. Features such as online upgrades, enhanced operating system compatibility, and virtualization support enable customers to implement improvements gradually while minimizing operational risk.
The release strengthens communication capabilities and data integration across distributed environments. With system-wide OPC UA connectivity, an Ethernet-based backbone, and support for smart field devices using Field Device Integration (FDI) technology, the system enables secure and standardized communication between different platforms and devices. This enhances interoperability and ensures seamless data exchange across operations.
A key feature of SPR2025 is the introduction of Automation Extended functionality, based on a separation-of-concerns architecture. This approach allows organizations to run advanced digital applications—such as performance monitoring, analytics, and artificial intelligence-based decision support—independently of core control systems. By separating digital and control environments, the system maintains operational reliability while enabling the adoption of advanced technologies.
The release also introduces several enhancements to improve lifecycle efficiency and system performance. These include synchronized version management and online upgrade capabilities, which reduce engineering effort and downtime. Support for the latest Microsoft operating systems and multiple virtualization platforms enables flexible deployment across modern IT and operational technology environments.
Additional improvements include enhanced device management through Field Information Manager, which simplifies device integration and maintenance, and expanded connectivity options that optimize communication performance while reducing system complexity. The system also supports a seamless transition from legacy platforms to newer architectures through automated conversion tools, helping protect prior investments.
ABB stated that SPR2025 is designed to provide a scalable and secure control environment that supports both current operational needs and future digital transformation. The release enables organizations in sectors such as energy, water, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing to modernize at their own pace.
