STMicroelectronics has introduced a new generation of ultralow-power image sensors designed to bring always-on vision capabilities to compact, battery-powered electronics. The newly unveiled VD55G4 (monochrome) and VD65G4 (RGB color) sensors expand the company’s ST BrightSense portfolio and are now available to early adopters for next-generation device development.
The sensors are engineered to support a wide range of applications, including wearables, augmented and virtual reality headsets, smart home systems, and medical devices. Built to operate within strict limits of power consumption, size, and cost, the new components deliver high-quality visual data suitable for artificial intelligence processing at the edge.
A key feature of the VD55G4 and VD65G4 is their global-shutter architecture combined with an advanced detect-and-wake capability. This design allows the sensors to monitor scenes continuously while consuming minimal energy, activating the main processing unit only when relevant activity is detected. The approach shifts systems from continuous operation to event-driven processing, helping extend battery life and improve overall efficiency.
According to AlexandreBalmefrezol, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Imaging Sub-Group at STMicroelectronics, the growing demand for always-on vision is reshaping personal electronics. He noted that the new sensors enable manufacturers to build lighter, more responsive devices that can operate for extended periods on limited power sources, while supporting intelligent, context-aware user experiences.
The sensors are particularly suited for wearable devices, where they enable features such as presence detection, gesture recognition, and contextual alerts without compromising size or battery performance. In AR, VR, and XR headsets, they support accurate motion tracking and spatial awareness, contributing to improved user interaction and comfort.
For smart home appliances, IoT systems, and healthcare equipment, the sensors enable more processing to be carried out locally, reducing reliance on cloud connectivity and lowering standby energy consumption. Their compact form factor also makes them suitable for devices powered by small batteries or energy-harvesting technologies such as solar.
With an optimised architecture, the VD55G4 and VD65G4 can reduce power consumption by up to ten times compared to conventional global-shutter sensors operating at similar resolutions and frame rates. Integrated image processing capabilities further simplify system design and help lower development costs.
Through this launch, STMicroelectronics continues to strengthen its position in embedded vision technologies, supporting the development of intelligent, energy-efficient devices across consumer and industrial markets. With a workforce of approximately 48,000 employees, STMicroelectronics continues to invest in advanced manufacturing and supply chain capabilities. The company collaborates with over 200,000 customers globally, delivering semiconductor solutions that enable smarter mobility, efficient energy management, and connected technologies.
