STMicroelectronics Introduces New Ultra-Wideband Chip Family for Automotive and Smart Device Applications

STMicroelectronics

STMicroelectronics has announced a new family of ultra-wideband (UWB) chips designed to support next-generation wireless connectivity for automotive, consumer, and industrial applications. The newly introduced ST64UWB series is engineered to enable precise device localisation and tracking over extended distances, unlocking a range of advanced use cases.

The chip family is built on the latest IEEE 802.15.4ab specification and integrates enhanced processing capabilities with improved robustness. The solution is capable of delivering highly accurate ranging and sensing, supporting applications such as secure digital access, presence detection, motion sensing, and proximity-based interactions.

Rias Al-Kadi, General Manager of the Ranging and Connectivity Division at STMicroelectronics, stated that the ST64UWB platform represents a major step forward in ultra-wideband technology. He noted that the system-on-chip design, combined with narrow-band assistance radio, provides developers with a powerful foundation for creating next-generation wireless solutions across multiple industries.

The IEEE 802.15.4ab standard builds upon earlier UWB protocols by introducing features such as multi-millisecond ranging and narrowband assistance. These enhancements extend operational range, improve connectivity even when devices are obstructed, and enable more precise direction detection. The technology also strengthens radar-based capabilities, supporting safety-critical applications such as child presence detection in vehicles.

Industry experts have highlighted the growing importance of the new standard. Andrew Zignani, Senior Research Director at ABI Research, indicated that IEEE 802.15.4ab is expected to become a core technology for future UWB deployments, with widespread adoption anticipated by the end of the decade. Backward compatibility with existing standards ensures a smooth transition while enabling new functionalities.

Automotive and technology partners, including Forvia Hella, LG Innotek, and Marquardt Group, have emphasised the benefits of improved range, reliability, and cost efficiency. The technology is also gaining traction in smart home applications, with Nuki Home Solutions highlighting its potential for hands-free access systems.

The ST64UWB devices are currently being sampled to major Tier 1 suppliers and original equipment manufacturers, marking an important step toward commercial deployment. With this launch, STMicroelectronics continues to advance ultra-wideband innovation, enabling new levels of connectivity, safety, and user experience across a wide range of applications.
