Sigma Advanced Systems Limited has secured an order worth US$102.23 million, approximately ₹973 crore, from a NATO customer for the manufacture and supply of Base Bleed (BB) Units used in 155mm artillery ammunition. The order is scheduled for execution over 12 months.
The contract expands Sigma’s presence across the 155mm artillery ammunition manufacturing value chain. The company already has capabilities in artillery shells and fuzes, and the addition of Base Bleed Units will broaden its portfolio of components for the international artillery ammunition market.
Base Bleed Units are fitted to the rear section of artillery projectiles to improve aerodynamic performance and extend range. During flight, the unit generates a controlled flow of gas that reduces drag caused by the low-pressure region behind the projectile. The technology is used in modern 155mm artillery ammunition to improve the range and operational performance of long-range artillery systems.
Sigma said the order supports its strategy of developing more integrated manufacturing capabilities for advanced artillery ammunition. With manufacturing expertise covering shells, fuzes and Base Bleed Units, the company aims to strengthen its ability to supply complementary components to customers.
The expansion is also expected to improve supply-chain control and reduce reliance on external suppliers. Sigma is pursuing vertical integration to build a broader manufacturing base and respond to demand from domestic and international defence customers.
Sunil Kalidindi, CEO and Executive Director of Sigma Advanced Systems Limited, said repeat orders reflected customer confidence in the company’s execution and delivery capabilities. He said the company was expanding its capabilities across artillery shells, fuzes and Base Bleed Units to serve as a manufacturing partner for customers seeking integrated production capabilities. Mr Kalidindi added that the order supported Sigma’s focus on vertical integration, indigenous manufacturing and the supply of artillery ammunition components to international and domestic markets.
The development is aligned with the Government of India’s Make in India initiative, which seeks to expand domestic manufacturing capabilities. By adding complementary components to its existing product range, Sigma aims to strengthen its role in the global artillery ammunition supply chain.
