Rolls-Royce will supply 350 mtu Series 199 engines to support new Boxer wheeled armoured vehicles for the German Armed Forces and additional international customers. Orders were placed by system integrators Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland for eight-cylinder engines delivering 530 or 600 kilowatts. Initial vehicle deliveries are scheduled for the first half of 2026.

The Boxer platform, developed as a modular eight-wheeled vehicle with interchangeable mission modules, has seen extensive adoption across European and allied armed forces. All more than 2,000 Boxer vehicles ordered or delivered to date are powered by mtu 8V199 engines. With recent additions, total orders for the 8V199 variant approach 400 units in 2025 alone.

The mtu 199 series has become one of the most widely deployed engine platforms in its performance class for military land systems, with more than 4,500 units delivered globally. Known for high power density within a compact footprint, the series supports both new vehicle production and fleet modernization programs.

Rolls-Royce is expanding the 199 series into a broader propulsion family to meet rising mobility and performance requirements. Planned developments include upgraded variants alongside new 10-cylinder engines delivering up to 1,100 kW and 12-cylinder versions exceeding 1,300 kW.

Dr Jörg Stratmann, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG, noted that modern armed forces increasingly require mobility, adaptability and higher output systems. The expanded mtu 199 portfolio is designed to address both present and future operational needs.

Knut Müller, Senior Vice President Government Business at Rolls-Royce, emphasized that enhanced parts commonality across the engine family simplifies maintenance, spare parts logistics and fleet integration. This modular approach reduces lifecycle costs while improving operational readiness for NATO members and allied nations.

Rolls-Royce powers critical systems across aerospace, defence, marine and energy sectors. The company operates in 48 countries and serves customers worldwide. In 2024, it reported underlying revenue of £17.8 billion and operating profit of £2.46 billion.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems, headquartered in Friedrichshafen, Germany, employs more than 10,350 people and manufactures mtu-brand high-speed engines and propulsion systems for defence vehicles, marine vessels, rail applications and industrial power solutions, supporting both performance and energy transition initiatives.
