Primetals Technologies and ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt have successfully completed a major converter modernisation project at the steel plant in Eisenhüttenstadt, Germany, with the installation of a new suspension system for the 255-ton LD converter (BOF) No 2. The project involved the complete replacement and commissioning of the converter suspension system in just 50 days, ensuring continued safe and efficient operation of a critical unit used in converting hot metal into liquid steel. The swift execution enabled the facility to maintain operational continuity while strengthening long-term production reliability.
The converter is a central component of the steelmaking process, where molten iron is refined into crude steel through oxygen blowing. Upgrading the suspension system was considered essential to maintain structural integrity, operational safety and sustained productivity at the plant.
Primetals Technologies carried out a detailed engineering study to identify the most effective solution for ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt. The resulting plan was specifically tailored to the site’s operational needs and designed to maximise the use of existing converter equipment, helping improve cost efficiency while reducing installation complexity.
In addition to engineering design, Primetals Technologies was responsible for manufacturing and supplying the new equipment. The company also provided advisory support throughout construction, commissioning and start-up activities to ensure smooth execution within the planned shutdown window.
The project was completed on schedule through close coordination between all stakeholders involved. Despite the tight timeline, installation work was carried out successfully, including the movement of the converter and integration of the new refractory lining, without safety incidents.
Robert Richter, Head of Steel Plant at ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt, said, “We successfully met a demanding schedule, and the converter, including the new refractory lining, was moved smoothly while production activities continued. The project was completed without safety issues and reflects the strong commitment and expertise of all teams involved.”
The successful completion of the revamp supports ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt’s efforts to maintain high production standards while improving the reliability of key steelmaking assets. The upgraded converter system is expected to contribute to efficient operations and sustained output in the years ahead.
