Primetals Technologies has secured an order from Japan-based steel producer Toyo Kohan Co, Ltd to modernize a pickling line at its Kudamatsu manufacturing facility. The project is aimed at improving operational efficiency, product quality, and long-term reliability of the line.

The scope of work includes the installation of new entry-side coil handling and transport systems to automate movement from the coil yard to the processing line. This upgrade will significantly streamline material flow and reduce manual handling. Existing pickling tanks will be replaced with polypropylene tanks, simplifying maintenance requirements by eliminating complex multi-material structures.

A major highlight of the project is the installation of an advanced laser welding machine based on Primetals Technologies’ latest laser beam welding solution. Scheduled for completion in 2028, this will mark the first deployment of this technology in Japan. The system integrates laser cutting and welding, enabling precise processing of steel strips up to 9.0 millimeters thick and expanding the range of products that can be manufactured.

By replacing conventional mechanical cutting methods with laser cutting, the solution eliminates reaction forces that can compromise weld quality. The newly developed optical design also minimizes spatter during welding, resulting in improved reliability, higher productivity, and reduced maintenance compared with traditional fiber laser systems. Toyo Kohan, established in 1934, employs around 1,500 people and produces tinplate, surface-treated steel sheets, and functional materials used in packaging, electronics, and household appliances.

Headquartered in London, Primetals Technologies is a global leader in engineering and plant solutions for the metals industry. The company offers end-to-end technologies covering the full production chain, including automation, digitalization, and environmental solutions, and employs approximately 7,000 people worldwide as part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group.
