The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), has presented a green building certification plaque to Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) for five stations on Mumbai Metro Line 3 under UGC Package No. 3. The recognition acknowledges the project’s focus on sustainable infrastructure, resource efficiency and environmentally responsible development. The certified stations are Jagannath Shankarshet Metro (Mumbai Central), Mahalaxmi Metro, Science Centre, Acharya Atre Chowk and Worli.
UGC Package No. 3 was executed by Dogussoma, with GreenTree serving as the green building consultant. The certification reflects the integration of sustainability principles into large-scale urban transport infrastructure, with emphasis on accessibility, resource conservation, environmental performance and improved public transport connectivity.
A spokesperson for MMRCL said, “Sustainability has been an integral part of the development of Mumbai Metro Line 3. The green certification of these five stations is a recognition of our efforts to integrate resource efficiency, environmental responsibility and sustainable practices into the project. We are committed to developing a metro network that not only enables efficient urban mobility but also contributes to a greener, more resilient and future-ready Mumbai.”
Mumbai Metro Line 3 connects the Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ corridor through 27 stations, comprising 26 underground stations and one at-grade station. With the addition of these five stations, IGBC has certified 16 MMRCL stations during 2026, highlighting the organisation’s continuing efforts to promote green infrastructure across Mumbai’s expanding metro network.
The certified stations have also been designed to support multimodal connectivity. Each station is located within 100 metres of bus stops and features dedicated drop-off zones, supporting convenient last-mile access and encouraging public transport use. BEST operates CNG buses, while electric buses have also been introduced on regular and feeder routes associated with Metro Line 3, further strengthening low-carbon mobility options. The project has demonstrated wider economic and financial value, recording an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) of 17.89% and a Financial Internal Rate of Return (FIRR) of 3.2%.
Chitranjan Kaushik, Chairman, IGBC Mumbai Chapter, said, “Mumbai’s metro network is an important enabler of sustainable urban development. The green certification of these five Line 3 stations demonstrates how large-scale transport infrastructure can integrate resource efficiency, environmental responsibility and multimodal connectivity. IGBC is pleased to recognize MMRCL’s continued commitment to building a greener and more resilient Mumbai.” The recognition reinforces the importance of green building principles in developing future-ready urban mobility infrastructure and supports Mumbai’s transition towards a more sustainable and resilient public transport ecosystem.
Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) is the nodal agency responsible for implementing the Mumbai Metro Line 3 (MML-3) project. Established as a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra, MMRCL is tasked with developing a mass rapid transit system that complements Mumbai’s existing transportation network and improves connectivity by bringing metro services closer to residents across the city.
Mumbai Metro Line 3 is a major infrastructure initiative aimed at addressing the transportation challenges of Mumbai, India’s financial capital. The 33.5-km corridor runs from Colaba through Bandra to SEEPZ and is designed to help ease traffic congestion across Greater Mumbai while providing a faster, more efficient and reliable public transport option.
The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), established by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in 2001, works to advance the adoption of green building practices and sustainable construction across India. With 32 chapters nationwide, IGBC brings together stakeholders from across the construction and real estate ecosystem, including businesses, government and nodal agencies, architects, product manufacturers and academic institutions. IGBC collaborates with government bodies, the World Green Building Council and bilateral and multilateral organisations to promote sustainable building practices and strengthen India’s green built environment.
The green building movement in India has expanded significantly, with more than 16.33 billion sq ft of registered green building footprint across 20,012 projects adopting IGBC’s 33 Green and Net Zero rating systems. With approximately 90% of India’s green building projects adopting IGBC Green and Net Zero Rating Systems, the council continues to play a leading role in advancing sustainable construction and supporting India’s transition towards a greener built environment.
