Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, has commissioned a 100 MW Group Captive Solar Project at Vellalankottai and Nalandhula villages in Kayathar, Tamil Nadu. The commissioning takes TPREL’s utility-scale renewable energy portfolio to 12.3 GW and its operational capacity beyond the 7 GW mark.

The project will supply renewable power to three Tata Group companies. Tata Power’s solar manufacturing arm, TP Solar Limited, will receive 40.625 MW, while Tata Electronics Private Limited will receive 53.125 MW. Tata Realty and Infrastructure Limited will receive the remaining 6.25 MW.

The project is expected to generate 240.63 million units of clean electricity annually and offset around 1.5 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. The power will be evacuated through the Kayathar 400 kV Grid Substation, supporting reliable transmission to the beneficiary companies.

A key feature of the project is the deployment of Flexible Terrain Compatible (FTC) Single Axis Tracker technology for the first time in a Tata project in India. The technology is designed to improve solar generation across varying terrain conditions. The solar plant has been equipped with 2,61,660 Mono PERC bifacial solar modules. These modules, combined with the tracking system, are designed to maximise energy generation while maintaining efficient plant operations.

The commissioning reflects TPREL’s focus on developing large-scale renewable energy projects and supporting the growing demand for clean electricity from industrial and commercial operations. TPREL’s operational renewable energy capacity now includes more than 5.7 GW of solar assets and 1.3 GW of wind assets. The company has another 5.3 GW of renewable energy projects under development. This pipeline comprises around 2.2 GW of solar projects and 3.1 GW of wind projects, which are expected to be commissioned in phases over the next six to 24 months.

The company continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio across utility-scale solar, floating solar and Battery Energy Storage System projects. The new Tamil Nadu project also supports the Tata Group’s efforts to increase renewable energy use across its businesses. The power generated will help the beneficiary companies meet part of their electricity requirements through clean energy.

Tata Power is a vertically integrated power company with operations spanning generation, transmission, distribution and clean energy solutions. Its total operational and under-construction capacity exceeds 26 GW, including around 17.7 GW of clean and green energy capacity and approximately 8.8 GW of thermal generation capacity. The company operates more than 7,800 circuit kilometres of transmission lines, including pipeline projects, and serves over 13 million customers through its distribution businesses.

Tata Power has also established 4.9 GW of integrated solar cell and module manufacturing capacity, signed agreements for 2.8 GW of pumped hydro storage projects and expanded its electric vehicle charging network to more than 7,000 public charging points across 717 cities and towns. TPREL’s latest commissioning strengthens its contribution to India’s renewable energy capacity addition and supports the country’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
