Hindustan Zinc Limited has rolled out Rajasthan’s first large-scale electric bus fleet, marking a major step in its push toward low-emission mobility. The fleet was flagged off at the company’s Zinc Smelter facility in Debari, Udaipur, in collaboration with Enviiiro Wheels Mobility Pvt Ltd..

The initiative forms part of a broader plan to deploy 41 electric buses across the company’s operations in Rajasthan, aimed at transforming employee transportation and reducing indirect emissions across its value chain. The shift from diesel-powered buses to electric vehicles is expected to cut over 11,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions over the contract period.

The deployment at the Debari unit marks the first phase of the rollout and signals a transition toward cleaner, more efficient transport systems within industrial operations. By integrating electric mobility into daily operations, the company is aligning its growth strategy with long-term environmental goals.

Arun Misra, Chief Executive Officer, stated that the move reflects a deeper shift in how industrial expansion is being approached, with sustainability embedded into operational decisions. He noted that the introduction of electric buses contributes to reducing Scope 3 emissions while supporting the company’s broader ambition of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.

The initiative is aligned with the company’s commitments under the Science Based Targets initiative and its association with the International Council on Mining and Metals, reinforcing its focus on responsible and sustainable mining practices.

In recent years, Hindustan Zinc has undertaken several measures to reduce its environmental footprint, including improving energy efficiency and increasing the share of renewable energy in its operations. Renewable sources now account for nearly 18 percent of its total power consumption. A significant milestone in this direction is the company’s 530 MW round-the-clock renewable energy agreement, which is expected to meet more than 70 percent of its total power requirements. Initial supply under this agreement has already commenced.

The company’s sustainability efforts have been recognised globally, with Hindustan Zinc being ranked as the most sustainable metals and mining company for the third consecutive year in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025. Through continued investments in clean energy, efficient operations, and green mobility solutions, Hindustan Zinc is advancing towards a low-carbon future while strengthening its role in responsible industrial development.
