Godrej Enterprises Group has strengthened its biodiversity conservation initiatives with a 19 percent increase in the biodiversity index at its Vikhroli campus in Mumbai during FY 2024-25, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to ecosystem restoration and sustainable business practices. Announced on the occasion of the International Day of Biodiversity, the company stated that its environmental sustainability initiatives are integrated into its broader Good & Green vision, which focuses on climate action, responsible sourcing, water positivity and resource efficiency across operations.
At the center of these efforts is the protection and conservation of the Vikhroli mangrove ecosystem through a three-pronged approach built around research, conservation and public awareness. The Vikhroli ecosystem, located alongside the company’s industrial and residential township, supports more than 1,500 species of plants, birds, reptiles, amphibians, animals and aquatic life.
According to the company, decades of scientific conservation efforts have contributed significantly to ecological restoration in the region while strengthening Mumbai’s environmental resilience. The mangrove ecosystem currently stores more than 23 lakh tonnes of sequestered carbon dioxide equivalent, contributing to climate change mitigation and urban environmental stability.
Tejashree Joshi, Head of Environmental Sustainability at Godrej Enterprises Group, said biodiversity conservation remains an essential component of long-term business resilience and sustainable growth. She noted that the company continues to pursue science-led and measurable environmental initiatives that integrate ecosystem protection into operational and strategic decision-making. The company also highlighted the growing importance of nature-positive practices as businesses adapt to changing environmental expectations, climate risks and evolving sustainability standards.
In addition to on-ground conservation work, Godrej Enterprises Group has expanded public engagement and environmental awareness initiatives. Over the past three years, nearly 1.2 lakh beneficiaries have participated in mangrove awareness programs conducted in collaboration with WWF-India through initiatives such as Magical Mangroves.
The company is also actively involved in collaborative conservation platforms including the India Business & Biodiversity Initiative and the India Wetlands Coalition, which encourage greater corporate participation in protecting critical ecosystems and addressing biodiversity loss beyond industrial boundaries. Godrej Enterprises Group stated that these partnerships help align its environmental strategy with global biodiversity goals while promoting responsible industrial development and community engagement.
