Energy In Motion Limited (EIM) has signed an agreement with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to build and operate fast charging and battery swapping facilities for electric heavy commercial vehicles at selected HPCL fuel stations across India. The partnership aims to strengthen the country’s electric freight transport network by setting up charging hubs on major highways and freight routes. HPCL has a network of more than 25,000 retail outlets across India, including key locations on highways and expressways, providing an ideal platform for expanding electric vehicle infrastructure.

As part of the agreement, EIM will roll out charging and battery swapping stations in phases. The first phase will focus on important freight corridors such as Mumbai-Pune, Delhi-Jaipur and Chennai-Bengaluru over the next 18 to 24 months. The network will continue to expand to additional locations in the coming years.

The new facilities will support electric heavy commercial vehicles through both fast charging and battery swapping services. All stations will be connected to EIM’s digital platform, allowing drivers and fleet operators to check station availability, make digital payments and monitor charging services in real time.

Under the partnership, EIM will install and manage the charging systems, battery inventory and battery swapping equipment. HPCL will provide space, power supply and other essential facilities at its retail outlets. This approach enables both companies to use their respective strengths and accelerate the rollout of reliable charging infrastructure across the country.

Battery swapping will allow compatible electric trucks to replace discharged batteries with fully charged ones in nearly seven minutes. This significantly reduces vehicle downtime, helping fleet operators improve productivity and complete more trips every day.

Energy In Motion is developing a nationwide ecosystem for electric heavy commercial vehicles through high-capacity charging and battery swapping stations. The company introduced its first electric heavy truck, the Ashwa 55-ton e-tractor, on August 1, 2025. It has already commissioned six heavy-duty battery swapping stations in the Delhi-NCR region and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port area, with a combined capacity of 840 battery swaps each day. The company plans to increase this network to 40 operational swap-and-charge stations by March 2027.

Commenting on the partnership, Narendra Murkumbi, Managing Director of Energy In Motion, said the collaboration with HPCL will help establish dependable charging and battery swapping hubs at locations where truck drivers already stop, making long-distance electric freight transport more practical and supporting India’s transition to cleaner logistics.
