EKA Mobility, one of India’s leading electric commercial vehicle manufacturers, has marked a major milestone in its international expansion with the flag-off of 15 advanced 12-metre electric buses in Zanzibar. Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, Hon’ble President of Zanzibar, unveiled the buses and formally flagged off the first fleet, marking a significant step towards the island’s transition to zero-emission public transportation.
Commercial operations of the EKA electric buses are scheduled to commence on August 1, 2026. The deployment forms part of a broader electric mobility programme under which 35 buses have already been ordered, with the overall fleet expected to reach 150 EKA electric buses by the end of the year. The initiative is aimed at reducing transportation-related emissions while creating employment opportunities and strengthening technical capabilities among local communities.
Vijay Yelne, President – Export Marketing & SCM, EKA Mobility, said, “The launch of Zanzibar’s first electric bus fleet is a strong validation of EKA’s technology and our ability to deliver world-class electric mobility solutions beyond India. It demonstrates that products designed and manufactured in India can successfully meet the evolving mobility needs of international markets. This is another step in taking Indian engineering to the world, and we see Africa as a key growth market in EKA’s global expansion journey.”
The flag-off ceremony was attended by senior Government of Zanzibar officials, Bishwajit Dey, High Commissioner of India to Tanzania, representatives from the Zanzibar Social Security Fund (ZSSF) and Global Rapid Transport (GRT), as well as senior representatives from EKA Mobility. As part of its long-term partnership, EKA Mobility is collaborating with GRT to develop local capabilities across electric bus operations, maintenance, software systems and safety management. The training programme is designed to equip local personnel with the skills required to operate and maintain the fleet effectively while supporting the creation of a self-sustaining electric mobility ecosystem in Zanzibar. ZSSF, in collaboration with GRT, is also undertaking initiatives focused on local capacity development and operational preparedness.
The Zanzibar deployment expands EKA Mobility’s international presence and highlights the growing adoption of Indian electric commercial vehicle technology in global markets. Built on EKA’s next-generation electric vehicle platform, the 12-metre buses are designed to deliver zero tailpipe emissions, efficient performance and enhanced passenger comfort, making them suitable for modern urban public transport applications.
The deployment also reinforces EKA Mobility’s commitment to supporting sustainable transportation solutions in international markets. By combining advanced electric vehicle technology with local workforce development and operational training, the company aims to contribute to cleaner urban mobility while supporting the development of local technical expertise. With the Zanzibar project, EKA Mobility continues to advance its vision of delivering sustainable, intelligent and reliable electric transportation solutions designed and manufactured in India for markets across the world.
