Delectrik Systems has secured a landmark project to deploy India’s first utility-scale 100 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) energy storage system, marking a major milestone in the country’s transition toward long-duration energy storage. The project has been awarded by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited, and will be executed in collaboration with infrastructure company Bondada Engineering Limited.
The project represents a significant step in strengthening India’s renewable energy infrastructure and is expected to demonstrate the commercial viability of flow battery technology for large-scale power storage applications. The 100 MWh battery energy storage system will be installed at the Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat, one of the world’s largest renewable energy projects. The park is expected to achieve a generation capacity of 30 GW by 2029 and will play a key role in India’s clean energy expansion.
The project is scheduled for deployment in 2027 and will utilize Delectrik Systems’ proprietary non-containerized Vanadium Redox Flow Battery architecture. The company said the design has been developed specifically for large commercial, industrial and utility-scale applications where long-duration energy storage, high safety standards and long operational life are essential.
Unlike conventional lithium-ion battery systems, Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries offer long-duration storage capability with minimal degradation over repeated charge and discharge cycles. The technology also provides enhanced safety, lower fire risk and the ability to operate efficiently over extended periods, making it well suited for supporting renewable energy integration into the electricity grid.
The project follows Delectrik Systems’ successful commissioning of a smaller 3 MWh flow battery installation for NTPC in Greater Noida during 2025. That deployment demonstrated the performance of the company’s indigenous technology and paved the way for the first large-scale commercial project.
Dr Vishal Mittal, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Delectrik Systems, described the project as an important achievement for both the company and India’s energy storage industry. He said the installation will become India’s first utility-scale non-lithium battery energy storage project and the first flow battery system of this size to be completely designed, engineered and manufactured within the country. He added that the project highlights the growing capability of Indian companies to develop advanced energy storage technologies that support national energy security and clean energy goals. Dr Mittal said the company is targeting an order pipeline exceeding one gigawatt-hour of flow battery capacity over the next 12 months across India as well as international markets including Australia, ASEAN countries and Africa.
To strengthen its presence across the energy storage value chain, Delectrik Systems has established two wholly owned subsidiaries. Delectrik Resources Private Limited (DRPL) will focus on upstream production of vanadium oxide and long-term development of vanadium resources, while Delectrik Esaas Private Limited (DEPL) will offer Energy Storage-as-a-Service solutions for commercial and industrial customers, including data centres and other energy-intensive sectors.
NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power utility, currently operates more than 90 GW of installed power generation capacity and plans to increase total capacity to 149 GW by 2032. As part of its long-term strategy, the company aims to develop 60 GW of renewable energy capacity, making energy storage a critical component of future grid stability.
