Burckhardt Compression, a global leader in reciprocating compressor technology, has been selected by Hydrogen Solutions AS (HYDS) to provide advanced high-pressure hydrogen compression solutions for upcoming renewable hydrogen projects in the Nordics. The projects, currently under development with regional energy and industrial partners, are expected to achieve a combined hydrogen production capacity of 20–40 MW when operational.
As part of the agreement, Burckhardt Compression will supply compression systems designed to handle hydrogen pressures of up to 515 bar. The technology will enable efficient filling of high-pressure tube trailers, supporting the safe and reliable transportation of renewable hydrogen from production facilities to customers. This capability is considered a key requirement for developing flexible hydrogen supply chains, particularly during the early stages of market growth where extensive pipeline infrastructure is not yet available.
The hydrogen produced through HYDS projects will be generated using renewable electricity and will support decarbonization efforts across several sectors, including maritime transportation, mobility, and industrial applications. The initiative aligns with the Nordic region’s ambition to establish a sustainable hydrogen economy by expanding access to clean energy solutions.
“Hydrogen distribution is a critical enabler of a successful hydrogen economy,” said Andreas Brautsch, President Systems Division at Burckhardt Compression. “Our high-pressure compression technology enables hydrogen to be compressed safely and efficiently to 515 bar for trailer filling applications. This provides HYDS with a dependable solution for transporting renewable hydrogen from production sites to end users. We are proud to contribute to important hydrogen infrastructure projects and support the transition toward cleaner energy systems in the Nordics.”
Frode Kirkedam, CEO of HYDS, emphasized the importance of selecting experienced technology partners for hydrogen projects. “Building a hydrogen production plant involves much more than installing equipment. The quality, reliability and expertise of suppliers directly influence plant performance, project risk, safety and long-term value creation. We invest significant effort in choosing partners who provide proven technology and share our commitment to quality, collaboration and continuous support throughout the lifetime of the plant.”
Burckhardt Compression’s reciprocating compressor technology is engineered specifically for demanding high-pressure hydrogen applications. The solutions address critical industry requirements, including hydrogen purity, operational reliability, energy efficiency and long-term durability. The company’s hydrogen compression systems are deployed globally across hydrogen production, storage, transportation and refueling applications.
The execution of the deliveries remains subject to the completion of customary agreements between Burckhardt Compression and HYDS.
