Burckhardt Compression, a leading provider of reciprocating compressor technologies, has secured a landmark order to supply advanced compression systems for the first industrial-scale liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO₂) carrier supporting the Northern Lights carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. The contract represents a significant advancement in the development of large-scale carbon management infrastructure and highlights the growing role of maritime CO₂ transport in global decarbonisation efforts.
The project marks a transition from pilot-stage carbon capture initiatives to industrial deployment, creating a foundation for broader adoption of CCS technologies across energy-intensive industries. As governments and businesses accelerate efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reliable transportation and storage solutions are becoming increasingly important for enabling long-term carbon reduction strategies.
Liquefied CO₂ carriers are emerging as a critical component of the CCS value chain. By transporting captured carbon dioxide in liquid form, these vessels provide a practical and flexible solution for moving large volumes of emissions from industrial facilities to permanent storage sites. This approach is particularly valuable in regions where pipeline infrastructure is unavailable or economically unviable, enabling cross-border transportation and expanding access to storage resources.
The vessel involved in the Northern Lights project represents a new generation of industrial-scale LCO₂ carriers, designed to support increasing demand for carbon transport services. Greater standardisation and larger transport capacities are expected to play a key role in accelerating the development of integrated CCS networks and connecting multiple industrial emitters to centralised storage hubs.
Burckhardt Compression will provide its proven K-Laby compressor technology for the project. Recognised for operational flexibility, energy efficiency and durability, the compressors have been widely deployed in liquefied gas applications and are well suited for demanding marine environments. The company’s expertise in gas compression technology has enabled it to adapt established solutions to support emerging low-carbon industries and evolving energy transition requirements.
Commenting on the order, Andreas Brautsch, President of the Systems Division at Burckhardt Compression, said industrial-scale CO₂ shipping is becoming a vital element in the commercialisation of carbon capture and storage. He noted that dependable compression technology is essential for transforming climate objectives into practical and efficient infrastructure.
Northern Lights is the world’s first operational cross-border CO₂ transport and storage network, providing carbon transport and permanent offshore storage services to industrial customers. Since commencing operations in 2025, the project has expanded capacity to meet rising demand from European industries seeking viable pathways to decarbonisation.
Burckhardt Compression provides a comprehensive portfolio that includes new compressor systems, upgrades, spare parts, and lifecycle services, enabling customers to maximize efficiency, safety, and uptime of their equipment. With a strong focus on innovation, digital monitoring, and sustainability, the company supports the growing demand for energy efficiency and low-emission technologies worldwide.
