Bondada Engineering Wins India’s Largest Grid-Scale Vanadium Flow Battery Storage Project

manufacturing news

Bondada Engineering Limited has secured a landmark contract from NTPC Renewable Energy Limited to develop a 100 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System (VRFB BESS) at the Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat. The project is recognised as India’s first and largest grid-scale Vanadium Redox Flow Battery energy storage installation, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition towards advanced long-duration energy storage technologies.

The project will be executed in collaboration with Delectrik Systems Pvt Ltd, which will serve as the technology partner. In addition to engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), the scope includes comprehensive operations and maintenance services for a period of ten years. The order strengthens Bondada Engineering’s position in India’s rapidly expanding battery energy storage market and marks the company’s entry into the long-duration energy storage segment. As renewable energy capacity continues to grow across the country, technologies capable of storing electricity for extended durations are expected to play an increasingly important role in maintaining grid stability and ensuring reliable power supply.

Vanadium Redox Flow Battery technology offers several advantages for utility-scale energy storage, including long operational life, improved safety and consistent performance over repeated charge and discharge cycles. Unlike conventional lithium-based battery systems, VRFB technology is designed for large-scale stationary applications where reliability and long-term durability are critical. The technology also supports India’s objective of strengthening energy security by reducing dependence on imported battery cells while enabling greater use of diversified raw material sources.

India has set an ambitious target of deploying nearly 236 GWh of battery energy storage capacity by 2030, compared with the country’s current installed capacity of approximately 3.3 GWh. As renewable power generation accelerates, advanced storage systems are expected to become a critical component of the nation’s clean energy infrastructure.

Commenting on the achievement, Rear Admiral R Sreenivas, VSM (Retd), Group Chief Executive Officer, Bondada Engineering Limited, said, “This project represents an important milestone in our growth journey and reflects our capability to execute next-generation energy infrastructure. We are honoured to partner with NTPC Renewable Energy on this pioneering project, which will contribute to strengthening India’s renewable energy ecosystem while supporting the country’s long-term energy security and sustainability goals.”

Headquartered in Hyderabad, Bondada Engineering Limited has established a strong presence across the renewable energy, telecom and railway infrastructure sectors. With advanced manufacturing facilities in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the company delivers engineering, procurement, construction and operations services across India. The latest project further reinforces Bondada Engineering’s commitment to developing innovative infrastructure solutions that support the country’s clean energy transition while creating lasting value for customers and stakeholders.
