Freyr Energy and Allu Cinemas have partnered to commission a large-scale rooftop solar installation at Allu Cinemas in Kokapet, Hyderabad, marking a major step toward sustainable infrastructure adoption within India’s entertainment industry. The newly installed 727-kilowatt solar power system is among the largest renewable energy deployments for a cinema complex in the region and is expected to meet nearly 60% of the facility’s overall electricity requirements.
The project involved an investment of approximately ₹2.27 crore and is expected to significantly reduce the cinema’s energy costs while lowering its environmental footprint. According to the companies, the installation is projected to reduce annual electricity expenses from nearly ₹52 lakh to approximately ₹5 lakh, resulting in estimated yearly savings of ₹77 lakh to ₹80 lakh.
The system is also expected to reduce carbon emissions by nearly 750 tonnes annually, contributing to broader sustainability and clean energy goals within commercial infrastructure sectors. The rooftop solar project has been equipped with an automated high-pressure sprinkler cleaning system designed to maintain optimal panel efficiency and reduce manual maintenance requirements. The collaboration reflects the increasing adoption of renewable energy solutions across high-energy commercial establishments such as multiplexes, retail infrastructure, and entertainment facilities, where operational energy costs continue to rise.
Radhika Choudary, Co-Founder of Freyr Energy, said cinema complexes are among the most energy-intensive commercial spaces, making them well-suited for large-scale solar adoption. She noted that the transition to solar energy not only reduces dependence on conventional power grids but also delivers substantial long-term cost savings and operational efficiency benefits.
Ms Choudary added that the partnership demonstrates how sustainability and business viability can complement each other in sectors traditionally associated with high power consumption. Renowned film producer Allu Aravind of Allu Cinemas described the solarization initiative as a practical step toward integrating clean energy into day-to-day operations while improving long-term energy efficiency.
He said cinema facilities consume significant amounts of electricity and emphasized that renewable energy adoption allows businesses to optimize operational costs while responding to evolving environmental and energy priorities. The companies stated that the project establishes a new benchmark for sustainable entertainment infrastructure in Hyderabad and reflects a growing industry-wide movement toward greener operations.
