ABB India Ltd has successfully completed a major automation and monitoring system upgrade for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Vadinar–Bina Pipeline, a critical component of India’s crude oil transportation infrastructure. The 935-kilometre cross-country pipeline supplies crude oil to the Bina refinery and supports a throughput capacity of 7.80 million metric tonnes per annum.
The modernization initiative involved upgrading the pipeline’s supervisory control and data acquisition system, replacing 35 remote terminal units across pumping stations, pigging stations, and sectionalizing valve locations, and installing new SCADA servers at both Vadinar and Bina terminals. The project also included enhancements to cyber security through network protection, system hardening, and centralized monitoring.
BPCL officials stated that the entire upgrade was carried out without any shutdowns, ensuring uninterrupted pipeline operations throughout the execution period. The new system architecture includes failover capability and disaster recovery infrastructure at both terminals, significantly improving resilience and operational reliability.
Representatives from ABB India noted that the project was delivered without affecting crude flow or refinery operations, despite the scale and complexity of the modernization. The upgrade strengthens the pipeline’s ability to operate securely under increasing demand and evolving cyber risk environments.
ABB has worked closely with BPCL on multiple infrastructure initiatives and has provided automation solutions across a substantial portion of BPCL’s pipeline network. This collaboration reflects a long-standing partnership focused on improving safety, reliability, and efficiency in energy transportation systems.
