Zydus Lifesciences Limited has received Orphan Drug Designation (ODD) from the United States Food and Drug Administration for Desidustat, a novel oral hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor (HIF-PHI), for the treatment of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). The Orphan Drug Designation is granted to therapies intended for rare diseases affecting fewer than 200,000 patients in the United States and is designed to encourage the development of treatments for conditions with limited therapeutic options. The designation underscores the ongoing need for improved and accessible therapies for patients living with SCD.
Current treatment options for Sickle Cell Disease remain limited. While hydroxyurea has been shown to reduce the frequency of painful crises in some patients, it is not universally effective and may be associated with adverse effects such as neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. Blood transfusions, another commonly used intervention, are costly, not consistently available, and carry risks including iron overload, hemolysis, and alloimmunization.
Desidustat is being evaluated as a potential oral therapy that could address these limitations. A Phase II, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-centre proof-of-concept study assessing the safety and efficacy of Desidustat in patients with SCD has been completed. Clinical data from the study are expected to be published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.
The Orphan Drug Designation provides several regulatory and commercial benefits, including eligibility for tax credits related to clinical development, exemption from certain FDA user fees, and the potential for seven years of market exclusivity in the United States following regulatory approval. Zydus continues to focus on advancing innovative therapies for unmet medical needs across therapeutic areas, leveraging its research and development capabilities to deliver meaningful healthcare solutions globally.
