Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has been acknowledged as an early adopter of the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework following the release of its inaugural TNFD report in 2025. The company has also reiterated its long-term commitment to achieving No Net Loss of biodiversity by 2050, underscoring a strategic shift toward integrating nature considerations into core business operations.
The adoption of the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures framework marks a key milestone in strengthening the company’s approach to managing nature-related risks. Through this assessment, Vedanta Aluminium has mapped its dependencies and impacts on ecosystems, while identifying critical risks linked to water resources and biodiversity across its value chain. The initiative is expected to enhance decision-making by embedding environmental considerations into operational and strategic planning.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, stated that the recognition reflects the company’s commitment to transparency and responsible growth. He emphasized that integrating nature-related factors into business decisions will support long-term value creation for stakeholders while addressing emerging environmental challenges.
The company has reported notable progress across key environmental parameters. As of FY2025, Vedanta Aluminium has planted over 2.9 million trees, with a target to reach 7 million by FY2030. These efforts are aimed at supporting habitat restoration, improving soil quality, and enhancing carbon sequestration. Nature-based initiatives such as bamboo plantations, fruit orchards, medicinal plant cultivation, and artificial nesting habitats have also been implemented to promote biodiversity around operational areas.
In parallel, Vedanta Aluminium continues to advance its decarbonisation efforts. Since FY2021, the company has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions intensity by nearly 9%, achieving 17.01 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of aluminium, even as production levels increased. During FY2025, the company utilized 1.57 billion units of renewable energy and is working to further expand the share of clean energy in its operations.
Resource efficiency remains another focus area. The company has achieved 100% utilisation of fly ash, reinforcing its circular economy approach. Its water management initiatives have enabled recycling of over 16 million cubic metres of water annually, with a roadmap in place to achieve net water positivity.
Vedanta Aluminium’s sustainability efforts continue to receive global recognition. The company was featured in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2026, ranking among the top performers globally and securing the second position in its sector for the third consecutive year.
