Microchip Technology has announced the expansion of its Configurable Logic Block (CLB)-based PIC® microcontroller portfolio with the introduction of the PIC16F13276 and PIC18-Q35 families. The new devices integrate programmable logic and embedded control within a single chip, addressing key challenges in latency, system predictability, and design complexity for engineers working on time-critical applications.
Designed for use in motor control, industrial automation, and automotive safety systems, the new microcontrollers offer an alternative to traditional multi-chip architectures. By combining Complex Programmable Logic Device (CPLD)-like capabilities with microcontroller functionality, the devices help reduce system cost, power consumption, and board space while improving overall performance.
Microchip’s CLB technology enables developers to implement logic functions directly in hardware rather than relying solely on software execution. This approach allows for faster response times, deterministic behavior, and improved throughput. The ability to automatically load the CLB during power-up or reset ensures that logic functions initialize independently of the CPU, supporting predictable startup conditions essential for safety-critical systems.
The PIC16F13276 family features 32 logic elements, while the PIC18-Q35 family offers 128 logic elements, enabling engineers to design parallel processing paths alongside traditional embedded control functions. This integration can eliminate the need for separate CPLDs and microcontrollers, simplifying system architecture and reducing the bill of materials.
Greg Robinson, Corporate Vice President of Microchip’s MCU business unit, stated that the new product families are focused on solving practical engineering challenges. He noted that integrating programmable logic into low-power microcontrollers provides developers with a streamlined way to enhance functionality without increasing complexity or cost.
The devices are designed to be drop-in compatible with existing PIC16 and PIC18 platforms, allowing developers to upgrade their designs without extensive redesign efforts. In addition, built-in Programming and Debugging Interface Disable (PDID) functionality offers enhanced security by protecting systems from unauthorized access and tampering.
To further support development, Microchip has enhanced its CLB configuration tools, now available within Microsoft Visual Studio Code. The tool features a user-friendly, drag-and-drop interface and includes an integrated synthesizer that enables logic design, timing analysis, simulation, and debugging within a single environment. This allows engineers to validate performance and identify timing issues early in the design cycle without the need for hardware description language coding.
The new microcontrollers are also supported by Microchip’s broader development ecosystem, including MPLAB X Integrated Development Environment and MPLAB Code Configurator. Evaluation platforms such as the Curiosity Nano kits provide ready-to-use hardware for rapid prototyping and testing.
