TotalEnergies has introduced MethaneLive, a global methane emissions monitoring center that uses real-time data analytics and advanced digital technologies to detect, measure, and reduce methane emissions across its operated upstream assets. The new platform, unveiled during the 10th edition of VivaTech in Paris, marks a significant step in the company’s efforts to improve operational efficiency while advancing its emissions reduction strategy.
MethaneLive integrates data collected from approximately 13,000 permanently installed sensors deployed across TotalEnergies’ onshore and offshore upstream operations. The company completed the rollout of the monitoring network during 2025, becoming the first energy producer to establish continuous, real-time methane monitoring across all of its operated upstream facilities.
The extensive sensor network generates a constant stream of operational data, which is processed using advanced algorithms and analyzed by specialized monitoring teams. The platform identifies abnormal methane emissions, determines their likely source, and provides site operators with recommendations for corrective action, enabling faster maintenance and improved operational performance.
Since becoming operational earlier this year, MethaneLive has identified 35 fugitive methane emission events that would have been difficult to detect through conventional monitoring methods. The early identification of these leaks has enabled targeted maintenance interventions, helping reduce emissions while improving the reliability and safety of production facilities.
Building on this digital infrastructure, TotalEnergies plans to expand the platform’s capabilities by integrating agentic artificial intelligence solutions. These advanced AI tools are expected to enhance predictive analysis, improve leak detection accuracy, prioritize the highest-emitting equipment, and support faster decision-making across complex industrial operations.
Namita Shah, President of OneTech at TotalEnergies, said the combination of real-time operational data, digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and engineering expertise is transforming the company’s approach to methane management. She noted that reliable data enables more efficient operations while strengthening safety, sustainability, and environmental performance across the business.
Methane emissions remain one of the most significant challenges facing the global oil and gas industry due to methane’s high global warming potential. TotalEnergies has identified methane reduction as a core element of its climate strategy and, since 2022, has committed to achieving near-zero methane emissions across its operated upstream assets by 2030.
The company’s approach focuses on two complementary priorities: improving the accuracy of methane measurement through continuous monitoring and implementing rapid corrective actions to minimize emissions. The deployment of digital technologies is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting these objectives while improving operational transparency and asset performance.
With MethaneLive, TotalEnergies is further strengthening its digital transformation strategy by combining sensor technology, advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, and engineering expertise to deliver practical solutions that support safer operations, lower emissions, and more sustainable energy production.
