TotalEnergies has announced the development of Pangea 5, its next-generation high-performance supercomputer designed to significantly expand the company’s digital and scientific computing capabilities. Developed in partnership with Dell Technologies and NVIDIA, the new system will be installed at the Jean Féger Scientific and Technical Center in Pau, France, and is expected to increase TotalEnergies’ computing capacity sixfold.

Representing an investment exceeding 100 million euros, Pangea 5 is intended to support the company’s growing requirements in advanced seismic imaging, artificial intelligence research, and large-scale digital modeling. The supercomputer will play a critical role in helping TotalEnergies improve exploration efficiency, optimize operational performance, and accelerate the development of lower-cost and lower-emission energy projects.

The enhanced processing capabilities will allow the company to deploy more sophisticated seismic engineering technologies capable of producing sharper and more detailed subsurface images. This will support faster and more accurate geological analysis, improving decision-making across exploration and production activities. In addition, Pangea 5 will strengthen the company’s artificial intelligence research programs by enabling faster data analysis and more advanced simulation models related to energy systems and integrated power networks.

A major focus of the project is energy efficiency. Pangea 5 will use advanced processors specifically designed for massively parallel computing tasks, delivering improved performance while reducing overall power consumption. According to TotalEnergies, the system’s energy use will decline by approximately 40 percent compared with previous-generation platforms delivering equivalent computing performance. The associated cooling infrastructure will also consume significantly less energy, with cooling requirements expected to be reduced fivefold.

Residual heat generated by the supercomputer will be captured and reused to support heating requirements at the Jean Féger Scientific and Technical Center, which accommodates more than 2,500 employees. The approach reflects the company’s broader efforts to integrate sustainability into technological development and operational infrastructure.

Namita Shah, President of OneTech at TotalEnergies, said the investment highlights the strategic importance of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in the global energy transition. She noted that the expansion in computing capability will provide engineers and researchers with the resources needed to develop advanced energy solutions and respond to rising worldwide energy demand. Pangea 5 is scheduled to enter service in 2027 and is expected to become one of the most advanced industrial supercomputing platforms dedicated to energy research and operational modeling in Europe.

TotalEnergies operates as a diversified energy company with activities spanning oil, natural gas, renewables, and electricity. With a workforce of more than 100,000 employees and operations in approximately 120 countries, the company continues to expand its global footprint while integrating sustainability into its core business strategy.
