Torrent Power Ltd (TPL) has signed a long-term Sale and Purchase Agreement with Japan-based JERA Co, Inc, the country’s largest power producer and a prominent global player in the LNG ecosystem. Under the arrangement, TPL will receive up to 0.27 MMTPA of LNG annually for a period of ten years beginning in 2027.

The LNG volumes secured under the pact will be deployed across Torrent’s strategic energy operations. A major share will fuel the company’s 2,730 MW combined-cycle gas-based power stations in India, supporting the country’s surging electricity demand, enhancing grid reliability during peak load hours and enabling smoother integration of renewable power. The supply will also benefit Torrent Gas Ltd, the Group’s city gas distribution business, by supporting the rising need for LNG to provide uninterrupted gas access for residential, commercial and industrial consumers as well as the rapidly expanding CNG mobility segment.

The agreement underscores Torrent’s long-term commitment to cleaner energy solutions, ensuring access to competitively priced LNG that strengthens both power generation and gas distribution portfolios. It also supports India’s national objective of increasing natural gas consumption to roughly 15% of the energy basket by 2030 and contributes to wider energy security efforts.

With LNG prices remaining relatively favourable, TPL and Torrent Gas plan to explore additional medium- and long-term sourcing opportunities to meet the growing demand from power plants and CGD networks, diversify supply options and ensure reliable energy availability for customers. Torrent Power — the ₹29,165-crore integrated utility business of the ~₹45,000-crore Torrent Group — is among the key players in India’s electricity sector, operating across generation, transmission and distribution.

Torrent Power’s generation portfolio today stands at an installed capacity of 4.96 GWp. This reflects a balanced mix of energy sources designed to support a stable and dependable power ecosystem across the country. Out of the total portfolio, 2.73 GW comes from gas-based power plants, forming the company’s largest operating segment. These assets continue to play a critical role in meeting peak electricity demand and ensuring grid stability.

The renewable energy portfolio contributes 1.87 GWp, underscoring Torrent Power’s growing focus on clean energy. This segment is rapidly expanding as the company accelerates its shift toward sustainable power.

In addition to gas and renewable power, Torrent also operates 362 MW of coal-based capacity. With this, the company retains a diversified generation base that can respond to a range of energy requirements and system conditions.

Further capacity additions are under progress, including around 3.6 GWp of renewables, 3 GW of pumped storage and 1.6 GW of coal-based projects. When completed, Torrent Power’s total generation strength will reach nearly 10.16 GWp, supported by 3 GW of pumped storage, cementing its position as a key contributor to India’s energy transition.

On the distribution side, Torrent Power supplies nearly 31 billion units of electricity every year to over 4.21 million consumers spanning cities in Gujarat, the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, key urban clusters in Maharashtra and the city of Agra in Uttar Pradesh. The company is widely acknowledged as one of India’s most efficient power distributors, consistently recording the lowest AT&C losses and the highest reliability scores in its licensed areas in Gujarat — a performance that continues to strengthen customer trust and satisfaction.
