Teledyne e2v, part of Teledyne Technologies (NYSE: TDY) and a global developer of advanced imaging solutions, has introduced the Perciva™ 5D camera, a new imaging system designed to provide high-quality short-range 3D vision for industrial, retail, and robotic applications. The technology aims to make depth perception imaging more accessible, reliable, and easier to integrate into modern machine vision systems.
Many conventional industrial cameras capture only two-dimensional images. However, a growing number of applications require accurate depth perception at close distances to support automation, robotics, and smart retail systems. The Perciva 5D camera addresses this need by combining 2D imaging with depth sensing capabilities within a single device.
The camera uses Angular Sensitive Pixel technology together with advanced onboard processing to produce real-time fusion of 2D and 3D images at calibrated working distances. A built-in Neural Processing Unit (NPU) enables artificial intelligence models to operate directly on the device, allowing users to customize the camera’s capabilities for specific applications without relying heavily on external computing resources.
Perciva 5D captures both 2D and 3D data using a single CMOS sensor, eliminating optical occlusion issues often associated with traditional stereo vision systems. The system produces synchronized 2D frames along with pixel-aligned 3D depth maps, providing accurate spatial information that can be used immediately for processing tasks.
With integrated 3D processing embedded in the device, users can access instant depth maps or point cloud outputs without requiring additional hardware. The camera operates using ambient light and does not require external near-infrared illumination, reducing system complexity and overall deployment costs.
Designed for industrial environments, the camera supports plug-and-play connectivity through a GenICam-compliant GigE Vision interface. Its durable housing carries an IP6x rating and includes industrial M12 connectors to ensure reliable operation in demanding conditions.
Factory-calibrated and weighing approximately 230 grams, the device consumes less than 5 watts of power, making it well suited for robotics platforms such as robotic arms, collaborative robots, and humanoid systems. Additional applications include retail self-checkout systems and industrial process monitoring where accurate depth sensing is required.
The camera also supports adjustable frame rates and triggered acquisition modes, providing flexibility for different machine vision setups. Through GenDC and GenTL, the device integrates with Teledyne’s Spinnaker® 4 API and SpinView® visualization tools, as well as widely used machine vision software platforms. Perciva 5D will be showcased at Embedded World 2026, taking place in Nuremberg, Germany, from March 10 to 12, where visitors can explore its capabilities at Teledyne’s exhibition stand.
