Tata Electronics and Sumitomo Chemical have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore cooperation for strengthening India’s semiconductor materials supply chain and supporting the development of a domestic semiconductor ecosystem. Under the proposed collaboration, Sumitomo Chemical will explore supplying semiconductor materials to Tata Electronics’ upcoming semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat.
The materials will include photoresists, functional chemicals and high-purity chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide, isopropyl alcohol, ammonia water and sulfuric acid. The two companies will also explore opportunities for manufacturing semiconductor materials and high-purity chemicals in India, with Tata Electronics supporting Sumitomo Chemical in assessing potential manufacturing opportunities.
“We are excited to partner with Sumitomo Chemical to strengthen the supply chain of high-quality materials for our upcoming semiconductor Fab in Dholera,” said Dr Randhir Thakur, CEO & MD, Tata Electronics. “India and Japan have a very close relationship and are deepening cooperation in the semiconductor sector, combining Japan’s technological expertise with India’s growing manufacturing capabilities to strengthen supply chains and economic security, advance research initiatives and skill development, and build private-sector alliances for India’s semiconductor sector. Our alliance with Sumitomo Chemical is fully aligned with the goals of both countries. As organizations with deep-rooted legacies and shared values, we are also aligned in our commitment to quality, excellence, and innovation. Together, we look forward to strengthening India’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem and advancing its ambitions in this strategically important sector.”
Satoshi Honda, Managing Executive Officer, Sumitomo Chemical, said the company would contribute to a stable supply of semiconductor materials and the development of India’s semiconductor supply chain. He said reliable access to high-performance materials and strict quality control are essential to the continued growth of semiconductor manufacturing.
Tata Electronics is developing India’s first commercial 12-inch (300 mm) semiconductor fabrication facility at Dholera, Gujarat, with a planned investment of US$11 billion. The facility is expected to manufacture chips for applications including automotive, mobile devices and artificial intelligence, serving customers in India and global markets.
Tata Electronics has established partnerships across the semiconductor ecosystem, including its alliance with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), which provides access to semiconductor technologies covering 28nm to 110nm nodes. The company said construction of the Dholera facility is progressing and the agreement with Sumitomo Chemical will support the development of a domestic supply base covering materials, equipment, process technologies and chip design.
Sumitomo Chemical, founded in 1913, supplies semiconductor and display materials, mobility-related materials and other advanced products through its ICT & Mobility Solutions business. The company serves semiconductor manufacturers worldwide and has expertise in photoresists, functional chemicals and high-purity chemicals.
Tata Electronics, established in 2020 as a Tata Group venture, operates across electronics manufacturing services, semiconductor assembly and test, semiconductor foundry and design services.
