Stellantis has announced that its in-house-developed automated driving system, STLA AutoDrive 1.0, which offers hands-free and eyes-off functionality (SAE Level 3), is ready for deployment. The system, unveiled last month, is a key part of Stellantis’ technology strategy, alongside STLA Brain and STLA Smart Cockpit, which focus on advancing vehicle automation, intelligence, and user experience. STLA AutoDrive allows for automated driving at speeds up to 37 mph (60 km/h), providing relief in stop-and-go traffic and offering drivers the opportunity to reclaim valuable time by engaging in non-driving activities, such as watching movies, reading, or catching up on emails.

“This system is all about making the most of the driver’s time,” said Ned Curic, Stellantis Chief Engineering and Technology Officer. “By managing routine driving tasks, STLA AutoDrive enhances the driving experience and makes time behind the wheel more productive and enjoyable.”

The system is designed for ease of use. When traffic and environmental conditions are suitable, drivers are notified that STLA AutoDrive is available. Once activated with a button, the system takes full control, managing the vehicle’s speed, steering, braking, and maintaining safe distances based on traffic conditions.

STLA AutoDrive relies on an advanced sensor suite to continuously monitor the vehicle’s surroundings, ensuring precise awareness and reliable operation, even in low-light or adverse weather conditions like light rain or road spray. The system also includes a self-cleaning feature for critical sensors to ensure consistent performance.

Stellantis engineers have optimized STLA AutoDrive to react naturally and promptly, ensuring smooth and predictable handling that feels human-like in real-world driving conditions. Whether it’s adjusting to merging traffic or maintaining a safe distance, the system works seamlessly to offer a stress-free driving experience.

At higher speeds, the system provides additional features like adaptive cruise control and lane centering in Level 2 (hands-on) and Level 2+ (hands-off, eyes-on) modes. Built on a scalable architecture, STLA AutoDrive is ready to be implemented across Stellantis’ global vehicle lineup, with the flexibility to meet the needs of different markets. Additionally, the system is cloud-connected, enabling continuous improvements via over-the-air updates and real-time data integration for optimized performance.

STLA AutoDrive complies with local regulations in the markets where it is supported. Drivers are required to remain seated, belted, and ready to take control when prompted. The system also adheres to regional laws, including restrictions on phone use while driving.
