Shyam Metalics Commissions 1.5 MTPA Beneficiation Plant in Odisha

Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited (SMEL), one of India’s leading integrated metal producers, has announced the successful commissioning of its new 1.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) Beneficiation Plant at Sambalpur, Odisha. Developed with an investment of ₹150 crore, the facility marks a significant step towards enhancing raw material efficiency, improving cost competitiveness and strengthening the company’s integrated manufacturing capabilities.

The newly commissioned plant is designed to upgrade low-grade ore into high-quality feedstock, enabling better utilisation of available resources and supporting the company’s downstream operations with a consistent supply of premium-grade material. The facility is now fully operational and has commenced commercial production.

The beneficiation plant is expected to deliver multiple operational advantages, including improved resource utilisation, reduced dependence on externally sourced raw materials and enhanced production efficiencies. By processing lower-grade ore internally, Shyam Metalics aims to maximise the value of its mineral resources, extend the usability of existing reserves and generate long-term cost benefits across its operations.

Commenting on the commissioning, Brij Bhushan Agarwal, Chairman and Managing Director, Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited, said, “The commissioning of our 1.5 MTPA beneficiation facility is an important milestone in our growth journey. This ₹150 crore investment strengthens our raw material strategy by enabling better resource utilisation, reducing production costs and improving operational efficiencies. The facility reflects our focus on building a more integrated and competitive business while creating sustainable value for our stakeholders.”

The advanced beneficiation technology deployed at the facility is designed to improve mineral recovery while optimising the use of water and energy resources. By converting previously underutilised low-grade ore into valuable feedstock, the plant supports responsible resource management and aligns with the company’s focus on sustainable industrial growth.

The commissioning of the facility further strengthens Shyam Metalics’ integrated business model, enabling greater control over raw material supply and enhancing resilience across its manufacturing value chain. The company continues to invest in capacity expansion, technology upgrades and operational improvements to support its long-term growth strategy.

Headquartered in Kolkata, Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited is one of India’s fastest-growing integrated metal producers with operations across West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh. The company manufactures a diverse portfolio of products, including long and flat steel products, ferro alloys, aluminium and stainless steel. Listed on Indian stock exchanges in 2021, the company has an installed metal capacity of 16.93 MTPA across the steel value chain, supported by 467 MW of captive power generation capacity.
