Shyam Metalics Announces ₹2,700 Crore Expansion to Strengthen Value-Added Steel Portfolio

Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited (SMEL), a leading integrated metal producer in India, has announced a ₹2,700 crore strategic expansion initiative aimed at enhancing its presence in high-margin and value-added steel segments. The proposed investment, to be funded entirely through internal accruals, will be presented for approval at the company’s upcoming Board meeting.

This new investment is in addition to SMEL’s existing ₹16,060 crore capital expenditure pipeline, of which approximately ₹8,700 crore has already been deployed. The remaining investments are being executed in phases over the next three to four years, reflecting a disciplined and forward-looking growth strategy.

Scheduled for completion by 2029, the expansion programme focuses on diversifying the company’s product mix, improving realizations, and strengthening long-term earnings. A key component includes a ₹900 crore investment in an 800,000 tonnes per annum Special Bar Quality (SBQ) and specialty wire rod and bar mill. This will enable entry into premium steel categories catering to sectors such as automotive, engineering, and infrastructure, while also opening export opportunities.

In addition, SMEL will invest ₹1,800 crore to expand its stainless steel operations and downstream capabilities. The plan includes enhancements to the melt shop, hot strip mill, and cold rolling facilities, along with the introduction of advanced annealing and pickling lines. This will increase the company’s total investment in stainless steel to ₹2,830 crore, positioning it as a key supplier for high-growth industries including automotive, railways, and coastal infrastructure.

The expansion is aligned with SMEL’s strategic focus on premiumisation, backward and forward integration, and capital efficiency. It is expected to improve margins, support import substitution, and enhance competitiveness in global markets.

Commenting on the development, Chairman and Managing Director Brij Bhushan Agarwal said the initiative represents a transition toward value-led growth, with a focus on building capabilities in sophisticated product categories and strengthening India’s manufacturing ecosystem.

Shyam Metalics operates across multiple states including West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh. With a total installed metal capacity of 16.78 MTPA and captive power capacity of 467 MW, the company continues to expand through integrated and sustainable operations. Listed in 2021, it currently has a market capitalization exceeding ₹24,500 crore.
