Seoul Semiconductor has announced a major milestone for its proprietary High Voltage (HV) opto-semiconductor technology, which has now entered mass production programs with four leading global automotive manufacturers across North America, Europe, and Asia. The company expects the technology to be incorporated into ten vehicle models by the end of the year, further strengthening its position in the rapidly expanding electric and hybrid vehicle market.

The technology integrates high-voltage LED chips capable of operating at 12V on a single chip, combined with advanced HV driver architecture. This approach differs significantly from conventional 3V LED systems and enables vehicle manufacturers to simplify electrical systems, lower component counts, and improve overall energy efficiency.

According to Seoul Semiconductor, the innovation can reduce driver-related components by more than 10 percent while lowering power consumption by approximately 10 percent. These improvements contribute to lighter, more efficient electrical systems and reduced manufacturing costs for automotive applications.

At the core of the technology is a multi-junction P-N structure integrated into a single semiconductor chip. Traditional LED systems require substantial voltage conversion when used in electric and hybrid vehicles equipped with high-voltage battery systems. By operating at significantly higher voltages, the new solution minimizes conversion losses and reduces the need for additional circuitry.

The result is a simplified printed circuit board design, reduced heat generation, and improved durability. The company estimates that the technology can lower driver costs by approximately 20 percent compared with conventional LED solutions while improving overall system efficiency.

Matthew Fras, Chief Operating Officer of North America Sales at Seoul Semiconductor, said global electric and hybrid vehicle sales continue to rise rapidly, creating significant opportunities for advanced opto-semiconductor technologies. He noted that increasing vehicle functionality, including intelligent lighting systems and vehicle-to-vehicle communication capabilities, is expected to drive substantial growth in semiconductor content per vehicle over the coming years.

Industry forecasts indicate that hybrid and electric vehicles will account for a growing share of global automotive sales through the end of the decade. This trend is expected to increase demand for sophisticated lighting and communication technologies that improve vehicle performance, safety, and efficiency.

Seoul Semiconductor has built an extensive intellectual property portfolio around its high-voltage semiconductor platform, including hundreds of chip-related patents and more than 50 patents covering driver technologies. The company views the current commercial rollout as a key step toward establishing high-voltage opto-semiconductors as a future industry standard. With more than three decades of expertise in LED innovation and a portfolio exceeding 15,000 patents, Seoul Semiconductor continues to expand its presence across automotive, lighting, information technology, and advanced semiconductor applications, supporting the next generation of intelligent mobility solutions.
