Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), an Institution of National Importance under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Elxsi to jointly develop advanced healthcare technologies and medical devices for India and global markets. The agreement establishes a long-term collaboration that combines SCTIMST’s clinical and biomedical research capabilities with Tata Elxsi’s expertise in product engineering, design, artificial intelligence and digital technologies. The partnership aims to accelerate innovation across diagnostics, medical imaging, digital health, biomedical engineering and next-generation medical devices.
The MoU was signed at SCTIMST, Thiruvananthapuram, in the presence of Dr Sanjay Behari, Director, SCTIMST, Manoj Raghavan, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Elxsi, and senior leaders from both organisations representing healthcare, research and technology functions. The collaboration is designed to create an integrated innovation ecosystem that brings together clinicians, researchers, engineers and product development teams under a common framework. By combining advanced laboratories, clinical expertise, prototyping infrastructure and engineering capabilities, the partnership is expected to enable faster development, validation and commercialisation of medical technologies.
The initiative will also strengthen capabilities in specialised areas such as biocompatibility assessment, toxicology studies and product validation, providing MedTech companies with access to an end-to-end innovation environment. Unlike conventional industry-academia partnerships, the collaboration is intended to support technology development through closer engagement between healthcare professionals, scientists and engineering teams, helping translate research into market-ready products.
Under the MoU, both organisations will undertake joint research programmes, technology development initiatives, academic collaborations and intellectual property creation through project-specific engagements. Initial efforts will focus on identifying high-potential opportunities for collaborative product development with applications in both domestic and international healthcare markets.
Commenting on the partnership, Sreevatsa Sahasranaman, Senior Vice President and Head, Healthcare and Life Sciences, Tata Elxsi, said, “Healthcare innovation increasingly requires close collaboration between clinicians, researchers and engineering teams. By combining SCTIMST’s strong clinical and research capabilities with Tata Elxsi’s expertise in product engineering and digital technologies, we aim to accelerate the development of healthcare solutions that address evolving clinical needs while creating opportunities for India-led innovation in global markets.”
The partnership reinforces the shared commitment of SCTIMST and Tata Elxsi to strengthening India’s healthcare innovation ecosystem by fostering multidisciplinary research, advancing medical technology development and supporting the creation of globally competitive healthcare solutions. The collaboration is expected to contribute to faster innovation cycles while enhancing India’s position as a hub for medical technology research and product development.
