Scientific Cutting Tools (SCT), a US-based manufacturer of precision solid carbide cutting tools, has announced the commercial launch of its Zirc (ZrCN) and Onyx DLC (ta-C) coating programs. The introduction of these advanced coatings expands SCT’s tooling capabilities for machining non-ferrous materials and high-performance threading applications.

The Onyx DLC coating is now available across a wide range of SCT’s solid carbide thread mill products, including UN and metric single-profile thread mills, straight flute designs, and 15-degree helical thread mills. Engineered with ultra-low friction properties and high surface hardness, the coating is designed to minimize adhesion and tool wear—particularly when machining aluminum and other non-ferrous materials where built-up edge is a common challenge.

In parallel, SCT has extended its Zirc (ZrCN) coating across its hydraulic porting tool portfolio. This includes tools designed to meet SAE J1926 and AS5202 standards, available in both reamer-style and pilotless configurations. The Zirc coating enhances resistance to built-up edge formation and improves surface finish quality, making it particularly effective for machining aluminum components such as manifolds and valve bodies used in hydraulic systems.

According to Jonathan Christopher, Director of Manufacturing at Scientific Cutting Tools, different materials introduce distinct wear patterns at the cutting interface. By expanding its coating options, SCT aims to provide machinists with more precise solutions for matching tooling to specific material behaviors, ultimately improving consistency and tool life.

The new coating programs are designed to help manufacturers optimize machining processes by addressing factors such as chip formation, heat generation, and material adhesion. By tailoring tool performance to application-specific requirements, SCT enables improved productivity, reduced downtime, and enhanced surface quality.

With this launch, Scientific Cutting Tools reinforces its commitment to delivering high-performance tooling solutions that respond to evolving manufacturing demands. The addition of Zirc and Onyx DLC coatings reflects a continued focus on innovation, precision engineering, and application-driven product development.
