Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on India’s automobile industry to focus on innovation, quality and excellence as the sector works towards strengthening India’s position in the global mobility market. Speaking at the 66th Annual Convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Modi said India’s automobile industry is well placed to expand its global presence as the country’s mobility sector goes through major changes.
He said continued innovation and a strong focus on excellence would create new opportunities for the industry and support India’s goal of becoming a developed nation. The sector, he added, has an important role in building a faster, greener and more self-reliant economy.
Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, said India has the potential to become the world’s largest automobile industry by focusing on quality, innovation, research and competitive pricing. Mr Gadkari also stressed the need to expand driver training centres, vehicle fitness centres and vehicle scrapping centres. He said these facilities could create additional economic opportunities while improving road safety and supporting the development of the automotive sector.
HD Kumaraswamy, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, said the Indian automobile industry is strengthening domestic capabilities while developing new vehicle technologies. In a video message, Mr Kumaraswamy said these efforts are helping India build a strong foundation for turning its domestic automobile market into a global manufacturing and technology hub. He said the sector is expected to become cleaner, more inclusive and more competitive as India works towards the Viksit Bharat 2047 goal.
Shailesh Chandra, President, SIAM and Managing Director & CEO, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle Ltd, said the automobile industry continues to play an important role in India’s development journey. He highlighted the industry’s progress in areas such as sustainability, decarbonisation and vehicle safety, along with its contribution to India’s long-term economic growth.
Shenu Agarwal, Vice President, SIAM and Managing Director & CEO, Ashok Leyland Ltd. said the Indian automobile industry has shown strong resilience and has the potential to make India a major mobility market, global manufacturing centre and technology leader. He said the next phase of growth must combine sustainability with resilience rather than focusing on growth alone.
The convention concluded with a focus on building a resilient and sustainable mobility sector. Participants also stressed the importance of technology, innovation and global competitiveness in supporting India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat. SIAM represents major vehicle and vehicular engine manufacturers in India. The organisation works on issues including industry development, road safety, environmental improvement and the contribution of the automobile sector to the Indian
